So i opted for the following:

I5 3750
GTX 680
16GB ram
1TB drive
120GB SSD
DVD drive
Cosmos II Sport case

Why I5: the cost was spiralling and the choice boiled down to an I5 with GTX 680 or I7 with 670 and I felt the extra bucks were better thrown into the FX card.

to be honest my current pc is :

Intel Core 2 Q6600 2.4ghz
6GB ram
Radeon ATI 5750 1GB card

im figuring that the I5 will be soo much better than the current rig and the I7 multithread wouldnt have made a difference to playing MMO's and XCOM - i have a Macbook for sensible stuff.

this is the truth.
my i5/gt555m laptop still plays most games comfortably on medium to high settings. its fine !

I'm still rocking an i3 and HD5770, borderlands on max runs fine 1920x1080, I dont expect any problems with xcom either :)

i've been considering a new graphics card (partly because my current one, a 5870, is 2/3 years old, depending on how you count, but MOSTLY because its not nvidea so doesnt do the physx stuff properly :p) - is the 680 GTX the way to go at the moment? if so, which manufacturers best atm?

I bought a GTX670 for my recent beastmachine - this one to be precise.

I picked it for the low noise and the fact that it was about 150 cheaper than a GTX680. These days it looks as though the 680 is still around 100 dearer than a decent 670. There is a 680 version of the Gainward Phantom and, if it's as quiet as my 670 then I'd recommend that wholeheartedly.

Its a prebuilt scan XS machine because, frankly, the hassle of building does not seem worth it to me.

The cost though for the full kit was 1364 to the door.

Let us know how it all goes, though I live in hope Valve releases a steam PC sooner rather than later to take all the hard work out of picking a gaming PC

Good choice, my last 2 PCs have been Scan 3XS and they do a great job, real attention to detail and awesome "factory" overclocks :)

Oddly enough we did get Ella's brother a alienware pc one xmas and he's still using it now and all he's upgraded was the videocard after I think 2 years. My issue though is the price, I always hear from people how PC's are cheaper than Mac's and like for like looking at spec that 100% holds true, but once I start looking at specing out a PC for home it always ends up coming in at around the 1000 mark, which is I know a low spec iMac but it's still a good enough for me iMac and would play the games I want if duel booting to Win7.

I will bite the bullet at one point though if only for XCOM I just need to get over my "cheap PC" thing

man, how do you guys spend more than 1000? lol

I think I upgrade my computer every 2 years (although this time its been 4 years due to moving house) I keep the case (Antec P182) and generally I always come in under 450-500. I can't think of a game I've had to lower the detail settings on for a long time. Granted I don't play crysis 2 constantly, but I'd be hard pushed to spend more than 800 on a comp. Most stuff out at the moment is giving extra power for the sake of sticking to their release schedule.

You build your PC though Art so are less limited, while I know Cad would build a PC for me if I bribe him with curry and cider, I'm always confused as hell about spec's of things, video cards, etc. For example I'd pay my 500 monies in a heartbeat for a PC which had written clearly on the side of it "Will play XCOM perfectly on top settings", but they don't that :(

Cad has offered, it was put on the back burner when I found out about Gnome Monks in WoW, but Steam keeps reminding me XCOM is released soon :D

With the Benedictine monks.
It still makes me sad inside to see that Dell logo on the alienware site. :(
