GPU is a bit weak imho.

If you can hold off till Juneish Nvidia are releasing their new GPUs. Even if you're not in the market for them their release might in theory push down the prices of the current hardware.

The CPUs are a improvement over the AMD in your first however I think you'd get more bang for your buck from investing in the GPU if your primary use for the rig will be gaming.

The two you posted more recently are sporting 960 graphics cards, there's a 970 at +66 from there but the performance difference is substantial.

What components can you bring over from your old PC?

Also do you already have a copy of windows 7 or windows 8?

I believe you can still install these and immediately get a free upgrade to Windows 10 which could save you 80 on your budget.

Nah old machine is still XP. I have a relatively new 1 tb Seagate sata hd (not ssd) but apart from that everything in there is seven or so years old.

Upgrading the graphics card at the moment is not on as I simply cant afford the extra - pushing way above budget to get the 850 for the ones I posted. If those machines I posted last will run stuff decently, I'll go for one of them.

Are you thinking that those cheaper machines I linked might be ok with a better graphics card Kelger?

Thanks for the help by the way.

That looks much better bang for buck, it will leave both those 850 boxes in the dust.

If it's important to save where you can you could drop the processor one notch to the i5-6400 and leave out the DVD drive (transfer the one you have in your old PC)(Either way you'll probably want to transfer your TB HDD from your old PC for additional storage?)

The biggest saving is still potentially on the OS though. It looks like it's possible to buy a Windows 7 key for around 20. You'd need to do the install yourself but it could then be upgraded to Windows 10 for free saving you nearly 60

This may sound daft but I realised (Well my son pointed out) that this is a mini tower system. I have huge shovel hands and would prefer a Midi tower. So I stuck the same parts in a tower case - I presume this would work as equally well and be as good a system as the mini case one?

(The prices come about 60+ quid apart, even though there is only a 16 quid difference in the price of the cases. I aim to ask them about that tomorrow)

That one uses DDR4 memory, the other one was DDR3.

The memory itself is broadly similar price but the DDR4 one will have a different motherboard.

As far as I know the benefit of DDR4 over 3 is not much to write home about.

Hmm I changed to every midi tower in that config and they all use DDR4. Looks like I am lumbered with it at 855. I dont have to use that zotec card - would you chose that one, the Asus gforce 570 or the MSI one?

Guy on overclockers is telling me to use this psu https://www.overclockers.co.uk/supe...0-plus-gold-power-supply-black-ca-003-sf.html as "While it is ostensibly a lower overall wattage, it is a better PSU and putting more of its power on the +12V rail that powers your processor and your graphics card than the default Kolink." and also "Asus GTX 970 as arguably more reliable, and in the unlikely event of a problem, a better warranty service" What do you think?

My power supply knowledge is a bit rusty I'm afraid, a quick search on the brands does seem to suggest kolink are not held in high regard though.

Asus also only offer a 3 year warranty vs the Zotac 5 year one. I'd prefer the longer warranty. I've had two graphics cards go on me within the last eight years both from reputable manufacturers and both just out of warranty :(

Ok Keep the Zotac card but change to the slightly less powerful psu?

Oh and is sixteen gig of ram overkill? I notice a lot of people on the overclockers forums only go with 8 for gaming? I want to play stuff like No Mans Sky, Elite and UFO enemy unknown.

Yeah, I'd say dropping 50W from a poorly rated brand to a highly regarded one is a good move.

It won't hurt having extra RAM but 8GB looks like it would be sufficient for all the games around at the moment.

Assuming the motherboard has four slots for RAM you can upgrade easily in the future if it becomes necessary.
