PS3 "limited backwards compatibility"

The scarey part:
embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation2 (PS2) titles.

Doubt it'll change anything but gonna be a pain for those that need to keep the old PS/2 kicking around cos the PS3 won't support there old PS/2 games. But rather confused why it's so much worse than other countries release, something special about the EU I guess

They are trying to save money as at the moment they are taking a loss on each PS3 sold, so every little helps as far as they are concerned.

However the European launch is later than the others, the machine is more expensive and now we discover it is inferior too. With the huge amount of -ve press they have been having lately you think they would've avoided this...!

Aye, it's odd I was a huge fan of the PS1 and PS2, spent many many a weekend playing GT with friends and having beer/barbiques to make the weekends slightly more rounded. But the PS3 really does leave me cold and I think more than anything it's the Press dept. of Sony and there exec's and the plain crazy things they say which puts me off. Blu-Ray is at the moment the reason I'd not touch it but if Blu-Ray does win I'd still not be rushing to get one.

Although I would be suprised if the games I'll mostly be playing like God of War 2, Okami, FFXII, SotC etc didn't work, I've been pondering cancelling my order.

I like the machine alot and can forgive some of the Sony disasters but it is getting a bit of a joke now. They need to keep the designers and techy guys and completely clear out the management, PR departments etc and start again.

Importing a Japanese machine looks more and more tempting.

Do you mean the still in development FFXIII or FFXII which came out last Friday Tree ?

I'm frankly astonished by FFXII. A few years ago I started doing a Masters in game development; I stopped half way totally disillusioned. Games ever since have been reduced to numbers, db's and sussing out how they work for me.

FFXII blows that out of the water. The man hours it must have taken to produce are nuts.

Aside from the depth of the game, playing it is more like an MMORPG than a RPG. They have introduced Gambits, nine of which can be set for each character in your party. Each Gambit has to be learnt in the game (there are many, many of them). They are along the lines of - if front character = 100% HP then 'Steal'.

Now you dont have to use them but if you want to it essentially turns each of the other chars in your party into a highly programmeable bot.

It also used Chains/Quickenins similar to FFXI.

I picked up Final Fantasy XII: The Complete Guide (Hardcover) which is a total work of art and well worth picking up for fans of the series.

I'll certainly be picking up a PS3. No way could I miss out on any of the FF series. Pika.

I love the FF series but Square aren't stupid, they have Fire Emblem for the Wii coming out, 360 has Blue Dragon (not sure who made that but supposed to be a top RPG title and the Japs are lapping it up). If Sony really don't pull there socks up they will lose the FF series, or Square's major backing.

A die hard Sony friend who's been firmly on the PS3 camp said at the weekend he's still going to get a PS3 but will wait for good releases since it won't support PS2 and isn't fussed about blu-ray as already has I guess a large enough collection he's backing as such HD-DVD. The big suprise was he's now going to get a 360 as well though, and I'll be getting one as well once there is a Forza 2 bundle out (and by then also hopefully a price drop). And while I know I'm not keen on Sony of late (as Tree through really it's the managers that need shooting, though I would add the blu-ray people to the line up) I am amazed Sony have so totally dropped the ball on this, even saying they are doing it too save money, now if they had an ounce of braincells working they would pass on a "minimal" price drop to the EU, fire up huge positive press for once and take people's mind off the emotion engine being missing ... it really isn't rocket science (though there can see the figures and stuff) but it does seem beyond the people current at the top.

And Flight disecting a game is a curse, I picked the evil habit up a long long time ago when being an admin on a MUD and adding areas, items, NPC's, etc, all MMO's since just seem like an MMO sat on a MUD engine. I'm lucky though it doesn't happen on driving games though which I can still thoroughly enjoy, and it can sometimes add a buzz when you realise you've been playing for 4 or 5 hours and have just been absorbed by the game and not disecting it ... that's a buzz and a good sign for a game :)

Aye XII mate on the PS2. From what I've played of the NTSC version its a masterpiece and I would rank it alongside Ultima VII, Tales of Symphonia and Dungeon Master as one of the best RPG's ever created.
