Roll20 virtual tabletop - anyone used it?

Zed DM'd some Shadowrun in it using the free version and it was okay. A lot of work setting up the macros up front and then maintaining them. This was a while back though.

Not sure what it's like to DM with.

What system are they wanting to play with it?

Runeqest 2nd/3rd ed to start, Then probably Pendragon or Stormbringer. I would somehow have to concoct a character sheet for it as they only have the horrible 6th ed one. They saw that you can webcam on it which kind of sold it to them I think. How easy is it to create a character sheet from scratch on Fantasy Grounds Sorontar? It seems a better option to me.

Yeah Stormbringer a tweaked RQ/BRP system. Might give Roll20 a go and see how far we get. Its free, I believe, so worth a gander.

Yup - FG2 is solid and if you can play those games using BRP that ruleset is there if needed.

Happy gaming whichever virtual route you take :)

Roll20 doesnt have a concept of 'character sheets' as such. Given its nature its incredibly flexible, but often just 'lists' of stats and skills etc that you can use to fuel dice rolls.

As Sorontar mentioned, the upfront macros are challenging but the system supported things like Shadowruns only hit on 5/6's etc quite nicely. I personally think its more flexible than FG2 to support rule sets NOT covered in either the free community rules or the pay to play rules from FG2. BUT FG2 is a much more refined product (or at least was 12 - 18months ago when we last used it). There are things in Roll20 not offered unless you pay to play mind which added at the time a lot of dynamic lighting etc.

BTW we have / I have an unlimited mumble server now which we can happily provide access to Clan UK folks and friends if they need it. I believe it supports 9,999 connections

So if each player just has his own char sheet at home, I have a master copy of each one and just use the online one as a quick visible reference? How easy is it to give the players in game handouts like maps, pictures etc in Roll20 Zed?

very. iirc off the top of my fuzzy head you need to have them uploaded ahead of time then simply share with one or more players. The prep time is making sure everything is in the 'system'

We do online gaming through Skype. The module's handouts are emailed to everyone before we start (so there's no download time) and then players are just invited to open map 3, or picture 24, or whatever, as we need. Google images is great for random encounter monsters :) As such I've not had interest in Roll20 and the like . . . does everyone need to have it, who's playing? Is it compatible across PC, mac and smartphone?
