Rafa's mantra this season seems to be, "If at first (or second, third or fourth) you don't succeed, buy a completely new team".
Looking at the players in and out on SSN, Liverpool have brought in about 10+ new players, mostly fee's undisclosed, and offloaded a similar amount. Is Rafa feeling that he got it wrong with the last team he built with regards to being successful in the Premiership?
Most of those signings are kids for the Academy and youth team mate.
The only major signings so far are Lucas Leiva (Brazil player of the year), Voronin (free) and Torres. The players leaving are Fowler, Zenden, Bellamy, Gonzales and Garcia, who came in for a combined 14mill and we are makign a profit on. Cisse leaving also, who was a Houllier buy.
I don't think Rafa is feeling he got anything wrong. I don't think people realise what a crap state the team was in three years ago when he took over from Houllier. By that I mean the playing squad, the clubs debt and the poor board and executive management.
He has totally rebuilt the team on a shoestring. With that, the only good players remainder of the squad from three years ago are Carragher and Gerrard, who came form the youth team. There are only two of Houlliers many buys still here, Finnan and Riise (who is crap).
Net spend for Rafa three years have been 13mill a year. Thats not bad considering he has totally replaced the squad, reserves and youth teams.
The mad thing with Houllier was he not only bought a squad full of crap players at high prices, he also gave them long contracts on stupidly high wages.
