All of the subservices that 2000 / XP runs are based around the Svchost "launcher". If you were to go through your system setting turning stuff off which you don't really need then you'll find the number goes down. Incidentally, doing this frees up memory thus improving performance. The only diewnside is if you turn off somethign realy important, you computer stops working.

If you get cored and wan tto know what they all do, pull up Computer Management -> Services and Applications -> Services, end-task the various svchost programs, and see what services, normally with startup type "Automatic", change from status "Started" to not started. It is a bit hit and miss, but doable.
