The Lost Fleet: Jack Cambell

Being a big Sci Fi fan I tend to avoid the mundane Star Wars and such in favour of better imagined works, for example Alastair Reynolds' Chasm City (STRONGLY recommend that one) but I recently picked up a copy of the the lost fleet: dauntless by the aforementioned author, and I have to say I am rather impressed, the first real military sci fi I have read and I have destroyed three of the six books in under 72 hours, so apart from raving about how good I personnaly find these books I was wondering if anyone else has some similar nreccomendations?

On a military vein:
- the Cassandra Kresnov trilogy by Joel Shepard. It's rather 'Fem-fi' but still pretty good and fairly hard military stuffs.
- Peace and war - the Omnibus Edition by Joe Haldeman - deals more with the impact of modern and fturistic warface on societies and soldiers.
- Anything by Richard Morgan. though Th1rt3n and Altered carbon are particularly great examples of his work. Way Way above average "i'm well hard and will shoot you in the face" cyberpunk stuff.

And never forget - Neale Ascher. Gridlinked, Line of Polity, Brass man, Polity agent then Line war make up one 'series'. Prador Moon, The Skinner and The voyage of Sable Keetch make up another, with a few odd books thrown in between like Cowl - which is awesome.

I have a lot to say about this stype of sci-fi. If you want i can just send you some high-res screenshots of my book collection - saves on typing :D I've never been able to abide by the tired, stuffy formulaic ramblings of the older authors. Even people like M. John Harrison seem tedious by modern standards.

Amen, shall be purchasing a few of those now mate :)

Edit: Grabbed Gridlinked, Brass Man and The line of Polity along with the latest lost fleet book, looking forwards to them, since I have to wait I bought the first book in Elizabeth Moons series Seranno Legacy, and thus far I am relatively impressed, time will tell though.

Its good to be reading again!

Considered Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein? Should hopefully change your opinion about the old stuffy classics.
Blows the film out of the water. :)

Have you tried getting hold of the stainless steel rats recently? old but like gold dust more like :p Same with Heinlein tbh, since he died the UK rights seem to have lapsed, had to import a load from the US when i was rebuilding my library

I got a bunch of Heinlein cheap off amazon (second hand, perfect condition, though I guess it depends on the stock). Libraries still have them, too.

I like the Sten series, not got enough to read through yet, but read the first couple and they were ok and made a change from my usual fantasy fare.

Loved The Stainless Steel Rat stuff :) fantastic irreverent humour and nifty silly gadgetry

I always found Harry Harrison to be a little... childish perhaps isn't the word, but I enjoyed them more as a teenager. Don't get me wrong, they're good books, but I found them a little light.

Oh absolutely, but there are times when something lighter is what hits the spot. Eddings is like that for me when I canny be arsed thinking. I suppose its the reading equivalent of watching soaps(not that I watch any so possibly there is great depth and meaning to the drivel that I flick past). Though I would say SSR is better than Eddings.

Indeed. Eddings got me into fantasy books (and Piers Anthony, now I think about it) and I respect him for that, but he's pretty crap really. ;)
