Virtua Fighter 5, a reason to get a PS3 or not

Ouch Sony, that's gotta smart, Sony can't seem to get a break at the moment. I think Tree mentioned this as a reason some friends would get a PS3, well not now they can get a 360 save money and have something to play right now (would have replied to that thread but wouldn't want to be accused or Necromancy again)

I think the PS3 will still be fine mate from first hand experience.

A friend imported a Japanese one and the media functions alone are staggering. The online stuff like the store needs tidying up a bit as its a bit of a mess. The machine itself is very well built with a built in power unit and virtually silent.

The first games are not too much to right home about although Resistance and Motostorm show the huge potential.

VF5 on the PS3 has an official release date of Feb in US and Japan and a release title in March for us so the 360 version will be a few months behind.

I've put myself down on several pre-order lists as I've been really impressed with what I've seen so far with the odd kink that needs ironing out.

If you want one sooner than that mate as they are region free take a look on e-bay, there selling for as little as $50 over shop retail value right now, which is rather a bargain given the previous prices seen on e-bay at it's release.

The menu I believe is straight from the design of the PSP and a really weak point, but I'm guessing it's all fixable in updates (which are happening regularly at the moment).

As far as the media functions go there's little point going down that road again, you know my feeling on blu-ray vs. HD-DVD and right now I wouldn't want either in our house.

And release dates always slip, but unless Sony totally dropped the ball I imagine it will be out on the PS3 before the 360. Time will tell

Aye mate I've been watching the prices on Ebay and you can get a 60gb Japanese one now for less than the price of the current quoted UK price. I used to be a big importer of games but now I think I'll wait it out. Must be my old age. Region coding is also not happening at the moment but Sony indicated that it may possibly happen in the future. The buggers have already twisted the screws on etailers like Play Asia etc who won't send out PS3 stuff to Europe.

I was thinking of everything else other then the blu-ray thing mate. There are so many little things that make you go ooooh. Like when browsing video files. Instead of files names you get lots of boxes on the screen, each box playing clips from that video and when you scroll through the boxes you get the audio from the particular video you highlight. Taking into account build quality and other things it does feel next gen even though the graphics may be similar to the 360.

I have a 360 and really enjoy some of the games on it although I don't think it has a defining game yet (Maybe Gears), but the PS3 does seem a different proposition although I'm sure with M$ head start they will both survive.

I've got to disagree Morg on VF. Its what all other fighters are compared too. Tekken had its moment around 1 and 2 but its been pretty average since then. VF4 Final is the peek of fighting games imo. I think the 360 release is a token gesture on Sega's part for the US market when you consider the amout of 360's in Japan. I don't think it will impact on the PS3 that much.

I'd have to agree with Tree VF > Tekken and I'm not a great lover of fighting games, as far as losing one game being an impact I also agree but given all the exclusives they seem to be hemoraging right now it's not a good thing, and I have a nasty feeling that FF could be moving as well at some point unless the PS3 numbers really pick up, they would be silly not too, but then if Sony can keep the Jap market that was the thing that turned them before.

As far as the other little bits, on the Wii I can view the stuff on my 2GB SD card, I needed to spend 5 quid on e-bay as we don't have a camera with SD card but it was worth it, I can listen to mp3, look at pics, edit pics, watch videos (put the WoW southpark one on it last night) and as shown above I can now browse the net on it (though I do now wish he had a projection TV but hey), Opera though could be improved on the Wii, some silly oddities which need improving (using 1+2 to scroll up and down would be a good start) but I still can't fault the Wii, even though I feel it's more a games machine than an AV system it still has some bells and whistles, while the PS3 is focusing I feel more on being a really good AV system first, and a games console second.

Have to majorly disagree, Teken 3 +5 were the best of the series. 4 was relatively weak but still better than any DoA you can mention. VF4 was a freakish hit bucking the trend of the franchise being pathetic, but still about equal to 5, but inferior to 3.

Yeah I play too many fighting games.

Is DoA even considered a proper fighter? :)

I generally found all the VF's generally better than the Tekken equivalent at the time due to the more strategic/realistic combat although each to their own I guess.

PS3 is only regionless for actual ps3 games, ps2 & ps1 are still region locked as is blueray.

DoA is a gravity simulator isn't it? =P Never got into the series.

According to statty stat mc stat.

Tekken 3 > tekken 4 > VF4 > tekken 5

Popularity doesn't mean quality, Mr Blobby got to number one after all =P

The Bastard Thats Grinding You Down
Tekken is far superior to any other fighting game on the market ever, with the possible exceptions of IK+ and Yie Ar Kung Fu and Way Of The Exploding Fist

FACT!

on another note, There will be a new version of Ninja Gaiden on the PS3, which looks phenomenal, on the downside its the same game with new features, but it is rather classic. I still cant understand how the team behind this are the same people that make DOA.
