After seeing the piccy that Chick posted up in the movie thread about 'Golden Compass' I was reminded of the books I have just finished after picking up again.

At one point the main char is riding a war bear

I have the 6 book series amalgamated into two 'War of Powers' and 'Istu Awaked' by Robert E. Vardeman, ;Victor Milan, all a good romp. None of it taken too seriously with a good dose of bedsport involved.

I don't think it is in print anymore but if you see it in a bookshop give it a bash
