Just because its a news item http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3551356.stm

I thought id start a poll

Pop up adds and spam the argument goes got to get 1 reply in a million for it to pay for itself cos its so cheap to do and thats why they do it

BUT do people think the pops up and spam are designed to make money from what there suposed to be selling (ie do they work)

OR are they a smoke screen and the real purpose is to make money for ANTI spam and pop up software firms, and there the ones (with sister companys) putting out all the spam etc

90% of spam comes from a small handful of compaies. Blame people like Scott Richter and Jeremy Janes.

That, or firebomb their houses. ****s. :D

Spam is in fact a very interesting area of marketing whereby the people marketing products actually believe that peopel read the pop up adverts they are displaying on people's screens. I think they believe that if an advert appears for even 1ms before it's closed the sub-consious mind will remember everything in the advert somehow. Everytime they get a hit the site in question gets a very small donation of cash from the advertiser hence people are trying to get their popups onto your screen as much as possible.

Advertisers obveously want their adverts to be as prominent (read in your face) as possible and site maintainers want the money from the advertisements but realize that adverts put people off reading their stuff... Let the fight commence... Advertisers have also realized that these sorts of adverts are not as effective as they once thought so revenues are harder to come by so forcing non commercial web sites to have more annoying adverts on them to please the advertisers.

I don't run any sites but have picked up these tit bits over the time I've been using the internet and seen many a site open and close due to too many adverts or not enough. In the end it's the only way most sites can be maintained as running a service on the internet costs money somewhere. I have no idea who runs this site for example but someone somewhere is paying a bill for you to read what I just typed.
