windows messenger service popup

Cos im illiterate most of the time i wrote the following in response to culls problem which is totally wrong. But rather than let it go to waste ill leave it here :)

Windows popups are very different to multiwindow ie spam. People have realised most PCs users have the messenger service turned on (as they havent a clue what this is!!)

Then all that happens is Mr Annoying spambollocks uses a mass Net Send command to an IP address range and voila every bugger gets an annoying spam popup box appear.

So how to fix this.

1. Sit behind an ADSL natted router - i have the Netgear DG814 but any will do. The router stops the netsend bollox working.

2. Turn off messenger services in control panel - services (this would be win2k, XP)

3. Use your personal firewall to block the following ports:
UDP ports 135, 137, and 138; TCP ports 135, 139, and 445;

(You get the added benefit of killing the RPC vuln here as 135 - 137 - 139 are netbios ports.)

(If you use BLackICe PC Protection tick the block Netbios neighboured box and your instantly sorted!)

There will be a way to turn off themessenger service in win98 but ive not found it yet.

Y'know I've turned messenger off in services (well, startup is disabled, Iassume that's the same), but I still get those annoying bollocking pop-ups appearing when I visit certain websites.

I've run ad-aware and that doesn't seem to spot the reason why either.

Anyone got any other ideas?

The messenger services allows me to send aremote message to a pc ie

Net Send G04T stop eating goat and get to work

If your machine is called G0at then you get the message.

Popups through IE are simply that - they use IE functions to spawn windows. Actually its often VBscript, Java script thats used to spawn those kind of windows. You can try to limit the VBs / JS in ie security settings to low and see if that helps.

I've also noticed that the latest version of the Google toolbar blocks pop-up ads. Done a great job for me so far.

Yeah I noticed that too. Was a bit of a pain till I figured out why some javascript windows I wanted to open weren't popping up though.

Google toolbar it's ace. Google, on a toolbar!

been thinking of running the google bar but I normally don't run any extra bars as they take up space on the screen and don't normally do what they say on the tin. I take it google is different and fully worth my while then?

btw, what does it do?

It's Google, on a toolbar. It's got a google search window, a couple o search option buttons, a pop-up blocker and an auto form filler as well as a few other natty bits.
