I guess it provides funding for training facilitys, coaching and funding youth programs. Not sure how a athlete earns money (obvisously i'm not talking about the top athletes) do they get paid? If so i guess that another job for the funding.

Very true how on eath does an athlete earn some poundage? They have no time for work I wouldn't think due to having to train tons every day.

I think all athletes should train like Rocky in Rocky IV ship em off to russia and just run about the place and play with logs! :D

Or bears.

Quite amusing listening to all the people calling Radio 5 with snide remarks about us sending so many useless people over (we have a large team, apparently).

Having lived alongside the Crystal Palace Athletics stadium for a few years and seen the decrepit state it's in, it's hard to know where the lotto money's going. On Kelly Sotherton's chips maybe :)

Can't believe Douglas didn't even qualify in the triple jump.

Tim Benjamin is a possible medal. He looked great at Crystal Palace on 22/7 (got a sub 45s PB). He'll probably manage an "honourable" 4th.

We obviously needed Dame Kelly :)

The recriminations have already started. Apparently, we have shit coaches.

I don't believe we've ever been much good, but we always seemed to have a handful of elite athletes who were genuine medal chances in the 90's it was Denise Lewis, Kelly Holmes, Sally Gunnell, Linford Christie, Roger Black, Steve Backley, Johnathon Edwards, Colin Jackson etc, etc, now aside from Paula Radcliffe we don't seem to have much at all.

Thats coz Athletics is a dull as sh*te and kids would rather play football, cricket or rugby IMO.

I would say right now over half the country is agreeing with me that Cricket isn't dull and a new sports superstar is born with Flintoff.

This is a 'sport' with is watched by John 'Grey' Major, hardly a ringing endorsement for excitment is it?

You have 1 close match in 100 and this makes cricket exciting? LOL.

It was also being watched by Roy Keane yesterday.

Janie, your views are hopelessly not in tune to, well, anyone or anything. I think being in Norfolk does funny things to people. I'm not even sure we should count it as part of the UK.

Tomorrow the football season starts proper, cricket will be relegated from the back pages, Radio 5 will cover the football with reports/updates from the cricket only and people will be talking about how there team did :p Apart from the coldplay/norah jones listening squash playing BMW drivers toffs and anyone over 55.
When England football team play in a major competition there are flags, banners, loads of people wearing the England tops, people shouting and cheering in the street after a good result. Does this happen with cricket, does cricket even have a world cup? Maybe the fans are to conserative (John Major :p) or maybe it just doesn't capture the imagination of the nation in the same way.

Well I like both. Is that allowed, or is this another volleyball thread? :)

"Half the country" would be much less interested in the Ashes had we lost the second test, sadly.

Likewise, that same half would be glued to Helsinki if we'd collected a sack of golds.

I think we have some 'potentials' in athletics, but it is looking like a bit of a lean period. Thankfully, 2012 is flipping ages away, so there's some chance of an improvement by the time we're hosting the Olympics.

Bit comical that we're pinning hopes on our 4x100m relay team when the US fielded 4 sprinters in the 200m final (& won all the medals). Have to hope one of 'em trips over. Where's Zola Budd when her 'country' needs her? :)

50 quid says Cricket will still make the back pages, especially if England win this match. The Ashes happens once every 4 years in this country and therefore gets the coverage it deserves.
