WoW: Helping or Hindering the Games Industry?

Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard, which is controlled by Vivendi Universal Games, estimated that about a quarter of the game's players are women, up from fewer than 10 percent on previous Blizzard games.

Where does Merly fit into this is the big question .

OK to sum up what they saying is, WOW is too good, how can we get people to spend money on our crap games, when they can spend money on WOW

Funny thing is Blizzard have released quality games over and over again, WoW's been a success because not only to do they have a "good" name (unlike Sony) for producing quality stuff but the game is simple to play.

What this should be saying to other games companies is shape up or ship out, unless you're going to make some quality games then you'll get stuffed.

Sounds like sour grapes from some of those comments, specially the Sony dude.

25% women? Bet 95% of that 25% are playing NE Druids or Hunters.

yer, sounds mostly like theyre saying "Well, wow's really good, and people like it... this means we'd have to produce good games to compete. we cant really be bothered with that, so we'll just claim that wow's bad for the industry to try to put people off."

on the females note, theres not many people that i'm *sure* are women that i play wow with. but they play quite a range of classes really... paladin, rogue, priest, warlock, mage. dont think i know any warriors or hunters... they are however all playing female characters, and either night elf or human.

Hmm, maybe i read a different articls. It seemed like 15% "Hey, MMO's exist", 75% "ohh, blizz, you are so big and strong and manly, can we have freebies" and 10% /join Crymorn00b.

Interesting article, though as usual for a corporate state, missing the point.

Interesting thought though, hwo many of those 1.8 bazillion players will still be subscribing in 6 months time ?

Comedy :D

Did The Matrix Online do badly because of WoW ? erm, no, it did badly cos it was pants, unfinished, unpolished, badly balanced
Did Street Figher or Mortal Combat break the fighting genre ? erm, no, it made it better.
Why did WoW do so much better than X ? a couple of reasons I'd suggest, 1) It's by Blizzard who have a long history of quality products 2) It involved many people who'd been vocally against EQ/Sony and so other knew some of the errors and mistakes wouldn't happen in WoW
Is WoW perfect ? Erm, no, it's just another step in the right direction, and for Sony to suggest Blizzard may be bad for the industry after there "swipe credit card here" servers is comical.

As far as long term subscriptions I don't think in 6 months anything will be along to displace that many people, what WoW has is a large group of casual players as well as the power gamers, and while there will be the normal ebbing of players from such a game it'll I'd assume be a larger number of power gamers/players than those casual one's, and then maybe others will realise that casual gamers are the ones you want to keep and please.

I'd still love to see numbers of players and there play times i.e

1 - 5 hours a week - 300,000
5 - 10 hours a week - 250,000

etc
etc

But I think I'd need to be fairly high level in Blizzard to ever see those numbers ;)
