These are 'leaked' pictures. They've been doing the rounds for a while, but I wasn't aware that they had as yet been substantiated. Certainly M$ haven't commented on them...

"X-box in looking-a-bit-crap shocker!!!" :p

seriously tho, did anyone really expect it to look as cool as, say, a PS2?

does the 360 still take so much of its architecture from PCs btw?

Assuming the pics are accurate I guess the design is supposed to fit in with your normal AV gear by the TV given the aim of making it a multimedia centre for Music, DVD, photos etc as well as gaming.

Anything wild and whacky just ends up looking poo a year or so later - understated works for me - (see the Ipod for example). If I was Bill G I'd be wanting to make XB360 as powerfull as buggery with some clever co-processors for video/sound etc. Awesome games from top publishers, wireless/broadband enabled for t'internet/controllers avoiding cables all over the place, easy to use, easy to sync up(or stream) your music from Media Player 10 (or whatever), a doddle to copy (or stream) your photos from your digi video / stills camera on to it, use the webcam/headset for VoiP/video calls, and make it as unobtrusive as possible so it becomes just another standard bit of AV kit in your living room...

Funky styling looks good in a teenagers bedroom, it just looks out of place in most living rooms, last thing you want is people unplugging the XB to "put it away".

To be honest I don't doubt the games will look awesome (as will PS3 & Nintendo next gen offering) , rivaling for 300 (or whatever) what I need to spend 1200 on a PC to get. Trouble is I already have a PC, the real hook for me will be the games plus the potential for finaly getting a powerfull purpose designed multimedia center into the living room to go with the TV/AMP/Sky+/DVD etc etc

Tell us what you really feel Cerb, not good to bottle it up old boy.

Consoles (or at least the NGC) are good for a laff with friends but Xbox will never be able to rival PCs for power/graphics/multipurpuseness (new word) as PCs are constantly being upgraded/replaced by newer money grabing bits of kit. The bonus of a console is that all the hardware is the same so programmers know exactly what they have to right to so the end user gets a more tightly coded product.

As for M$ making a one-for-all games console/media center they've left it a bit late. As Nym says, everyone already has boxes that are built specifically and perposely for each task, there's no-way they would replace it with one box that does a bit of everything without that box excelling in everthing it claims to be able to do.

Think they should have concentrated on making it smaller/thinner/more powerfull. Like a hardcore notebook without the screen.

I'd disagree, but not jues because i like typing teh word.

At teh moment, everyoen owns a stack of gear because it is all you can get. However, consider a younger person who lives a thome still, with an XBox 360 in their bedroom. Do they needa ny more gear? when they move out, will they then need to buy a dvd/amp/whatever ?

These kind of systems will come to be echo the "HiFi in a box" mentality IIRC. You start off with one, you ditchit in favour of seperates when you can afford it,a s they are better, then you slowly drift back twards them for certain circumstances / environments.

M$ are purportedly making 2 versions of 360. The first is the media center with in-built high-capacity HD along with some kinda digi/web-TV capability (don't know the details here). The second version will be slightly stripped down and designed purely for the gamer.

The connector on the top... or left hand side of the box (depending how you have it) is for attaching a HD

A media centre edition would be a lot more interesting to me. I recently wasted work prp cash on an apple ibook & have surprised myself by using it more to watching streaming video & listen to radio4 than anything else (though it does have WoW & Football Manager on it :))

Internet speeds (my 2Mb one, at least) don't seem quite up to video-on-demand yet, but we're clearly getting closer. I'd also like a replacement for TiVo as the tenner a month is probably a waste these days & it's got quite a small HD by today's standards (40Gb).

I think that's called "turning into an old git" :) I did enjoy my days as an impoverished hifi separates snob. Now I have a very crappy micro system that I hardly ever use. The cheap PC surround speakers (49.99 from PC World) effortlessly outclass it...

White plastic is so very cheap looking, tacky & chav-tastic it's fine for fridges, freezers and washing machines but things for entertainment look much better in black.

Its not white plastic its brushed aluminium, just an odd reflection (I think).

oh and Byzah, either china or japan (one of those far east countries) have just rolled out 1Gb internet connections, makes our 8Mb max seems kinda weedy.

I'd be convinced if

1) It wasn't as damn noisy as the current X-Box which is too noisy to just turn on and use as a music or dvd player
2) it is backward compatable
3) They don't make be pay 29.99 for some stupid tacky remote control and reciever to watch a DvD

All in one system sounds really quite nice and we could do with a newer DvD player, but it's going to have to do a much better job than the current X-box.

And I like the look of it though it would mean I would have to reshuffle the TV cabinet as the CD tray is so close to the top.
