Galias

\o/
Bit of info to follow up on Fanfs SF guide to objective C:-
2) When you are going to pass the gaurd tower you have to go the wall closest to the tower and hug those rocks like they are your lover! Stay so close taht you can lick it. Slow crawl or fast when not in trees.
To add to this, watch the searchlight, initially wait in the first bush before the first rock and wait for it to begin to sweep away from you then follow it. Once it begins its return sweep stop moving. Do not be tempted to move from now on while the beam is in front of you. Begin moving only after it has passed and is behind you. As soon as it is starting to come up on you from behind stop again and wait until it has done its cycle and is moving away behind you again. You are more likely to succeed getting past it this way.

Guess I'll have to carry the name Galias over to FPSs to play with you guys if I pass my trial period, as I believe someone on here would object if I started using my normal FPS handle of 'Crow' ;)

Dart

Dead Again, I need a Rez
You can get up though those rocks to the right of the first bridge actually. You dont need to go along the waterbed

you can actually virtually do the whole thing on fast crawl if you take care - exceptions being:
1) the very end of section B - you'll pass a soldier on a fixed machine gun up on the right - slow [shift] and keep going slow virtually til it says objective B complete. If any soldier says anything STOP MOVING -wait 15 seconds or so then continue.
2) on section C heading under the spotlights - obviously abject caution at all times. I did this at fast crawl though just nudging the forward button.
3) where in the guide [few post back in thread] it says drop off bridge - you don't need to - head behind bush to the right - go down rock but switch to crouch just before you enter water - slow crouch will get you across damp section til you see wet clay on other side - thereafter its fast crawl again until you hit the rock.
4) slow crouch up rock, hit fast crawl at top but being cautious initially (you're actually about 10 ft away from a guard here)

so long as you're sensible - ie stay out of crackly bushes and don't wear the hat with the big feathers, you can do the whole thing in about 15 minutes.

A bit of stuff on nades

How to Throw
The latest versions of the game allow great accuracy when you toss a nade. Your left hand index finger guides exactly where the nade will go, all you have to do is judge the height.

Also, if you need to toss a nade straight up, just look as far back as you can and toss. You will automatically toss straight up if you move your mouse to look as far back as possible.

The tougher part of tossing nades is cooking them. Cooking a nade means that you have lit the fuse in the nade, but have not yet tossed it. This allows you to time your throw so that the nade blows up on impact, or shortly afterwards, giving the enemy no chance to hide.

To cook a nade, choose a nade (2), get into throwing position (left-click and hold on the mouse), start the fuse (right-click on the mouse), count to three, toss the nade (release left-click on the mouse), and duck behind cover.

You do not want to be in sight of the blast when the nade explodes as it will very often kill you. Quickly duck behind a wall or obstacle so the fragments can not hit you.

Counting to three is guesswork. Nades in the game do not detonate at a consistent time...just like real nades. Some will blow up at 5 seconds, some at three and a half. The Army says that a five second fuse is guaranteed to last three seconds. Take the hint and throw the nade early.

Now that you know how to throw them, practice throwing them at obvious targets. Open your favorite map in offline mode (see the newsletter on console commands to play in offline mode), and toss nades off walls, up in the air, through ladder accesses, into vents, down fox holes, through windows, and off of pipes.

Throw Nades Silently
When you toss a nade, be sure to be in walk mode ('Shift'). This will allow you to toss the nade silently, giving the enemy as little warning as possible that he is about to be blown to bits.

One more thing: when practicing, play in god mode.

A few newbie tips and the console commands list

Top 10 Newbie Mistakes

1. Rushing. In this game, patience is everything. Nothing will help you live longer and win more rounds than relaxing, hanging back from the obvious hot areas, and sniping those players that are over-anxious. Very few games end with the time at 0:00, so play the game slowly instead of thinking its a race.

2. Leaving doors open when you are on Defense. During the first 15 seconds of a round, leaving doors open is perfectly acceptable. After the first rush, help out closing the doors. If you walk by a door that is open, help out your team and close it. This prevents the Assaulters from entering a room silently or throwing nades into a room without exposing themselves. A closed door makes the enemy give up their position.

3. Not reporting in. The default key to report in is 'U'. Change it to the letter 'Q' and you have a convenient way to report in without looking at your keyboard. Reporting in lets your teammates know where the OpFor is when you are killed. This is very important late in a round. Wouldn't you want to know which door the OpFor is about to come charging through? Try to report in every 20-30 seconds.

4. Blind nades. Do not throw grenades at areas that you can't see, unless you know for sure your team cannot be hit by shrapnel.

5. Not knowing the map or objectives. Hit the F1 key often to know how many men are left on your team. When its down to a couple, make sure you are covering a key objective(s). Study the map and play offline to know where the key objectives are, and the fastest routes to get there when your team is only...you.

6. Not communicating. In addition to reporting in every 20-30 seconds, talk to your teammates. If you notice an enemy soldier, tell your team where he is. Ask if the objectives are covered. Surround the other team by using good communication. Often times it is better to report the enemys position than trying to kill him with a low-percentage shot.

7. Weapon shopping. You will see experienced players with an M16 kill someone with a SAW and then walk right by them without picking up the SAW, moving quickly to their next target. Dont try to pick up a better weapon if it is going to expose you. An M16 is a great weapon in the hands of someone who is alive, while a SAW is a lousy weapon in the hands of someone who is dead. If you can do it quickly, do it. If it exposes you, don't do it.

8. Smelling the roses. This is not a nature tour. Veterans move quickly and do not reflect on a kill. Newbies often stop in their tracks while trying to switch weapons, reload, shoot someone, etc. This makes you an easy target.

9. Running out of ammo. Reload often. When you kill someone, reload. When you drop below 21 bullets in your clip, reload. Always try to reload with cover such as behind a wall, or a door. Don't make yourself an easy target. Listening while reloading is good. When it's silent, hit the 'R' button.

10. Teasing other players. No one likes to be told they suck or how to play. Everyone likes to be told they made a nice play, so do that often. Even veterans like to hear it from newbies. A lot of guys will flame you because youre new, but dont take it personally, and dont start votekicks. Veterans almost never votekick, and when they do, the person usually gets kicked. They know when someone is being a big enough jerk that the rest of the players will agree. When you're new, it's hard to tell and you may make yourself a target with unnecessary votekicks.

Console Commands

New for version 2.0: Special Forces
These commands may be typed into the console in Americas Army. Some commands work at all times, while other commands work only in practice mode or on cheat-enabled servers.

The tilde key (~) above the tab key is used to access the console during gameplay. Striking this key activates a cursor at the upper left part of the screen.

While the console is activated, you may type with the keyboard, but the regular keyboard controls (movement, for example) are deactived for this purpose. Note: the mouse still works, allowing you to look around and, most importantly, fire! To turn the console off, strike the tilde key (~) again.

During Gameplay
These are the controls you may use while playing the game:

flush: Cleans memory used in the game, possibly giving you faster responses. Flush if you are lagging, it might help.

votekick: This function allows you to nominate a player for getting kicked off the server for various reasons.
Type votekick frisco3 1 to kick frisco3 for being idle.
You must type in a reason...1) idle,
2) violating ROE,
3) foul or abusive language, and
4) spamming chat.

reasonlist: If you forget the reasons to votekick someone, type this and it will list the reasons.

playerlist: Brings up a list of all the players that are currently logged onto your server, including spectators. The handy thing about this is that it assigns a number to each player. When you need to votekick someone, use this number instead of trying to type in their name! Works GREAT for players using intentionally deceptive names with weird characters.

suicide: It makes you instantly drop dead. Handy if you enter a server and you are currently the only one on the server, or the only one on your team and you are kind enough to kill yourself rather than play one on one.

agphud: 0 Hides the Heads Up Display (HUD). agphud 1 turns HUD back on.

exit or quit Closes program and gives you the desktop.

disconnect Leave the server.

reconnect Rejoin the server. You may need to do this if your connection cuts out on you or if you kill yourself in practice mode.

stat fps: Shows frames per second in the upper right of the screen over the word Objectives. Much more accurate than looking at the F1 screen.

stat net: Shows network connection statistics on the left of screen. Type again, or stat none to turn off.

stat game: Shows performance information on left of screen. Type again, or stat none to turn off.

stat hardware: Shows information on your computer on the left of screen. Type again or stat none to turn off.

stat render: Shows rendering information on left of screen. Type again or stat none to turn off.

stat all: Shows all stat information. Stat none to turn off.

stat none: Turns off any stat info on the screen.

getres: Shows screen resolution and color depth.

memstat: Shows information on memory.

open xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx :Join a server directly if you know the IP address.

open xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx?password=*****: Join a server requiring a password directly if you know the IP address. Replace ***** with the password.

devkick: This used to kick you off a server, but has no effect on version 1.7 or newer. Players would suggest that newbies type this to call an administrator, turn fog off, etc. Instead, it booted the innocent player off the server.

quit fog, quit smoke: Dont fall for this one either. Quit is the only thing the console understands and it will not turn the fog or smoke off, it will just leave you feeling foolish.

Shot: Takes a screenshot. Also, you can hit the 'Print Screen' key. This places a picture of the screen onto your clipboard where it may be pasted into another program such as Photoshop.

netspeed 3000: Change netspeed settings. 3000-10000 is recommended.

lanspeed 20000: Don't change this setting.

AGPMainmenu: Gives you the AA main menu.

Brightness: Changes your screen brightness.

Contrast :Changes your screen contrast.

Gamma: Changes your screen gamma.

Resolution :Changes your screen resolution.

Crosshair: Changes your crosshair.

dumpcache: Clears your RAM.

togglefullscreen: Changes back and forth from full screen to restore view.

Practice Mode: Use the console to call up a map, stroll through it offline, learn where the objectives and good hiding places are, summon some target dummies and practice throwing tough nade tosses.

open Pipeline.aao: Loads the pipeline map. All the maps of Americas Army are actually loaded on your computer already, they are not loaded from the server when you get online. You can load any of them offline and play them by yourself. If you dont want to practice Pipeline, type in the appropriate map:

Bridge.aao
Bridge_SE.aao
FLS.aao
HQ_Raid.aao
Insurgent_Camp.aao
JRTC_Farm.aao
Mountain_Ambush.aao
Mountain_Pass.aao
MOUT_McKenna.aao

SFhospital.aao
SFrecon.aao
Swamp_Raid.aao
Tunnel.aao
Weapons_Cache.aao
Weapons_Cache_SE.aao

start Pipeline.aao: Same as open Pipeline.aao.

playerlock 0: Allows you to move normally. You are frozen when you first load a map.

mpcheat changeclass r: Gives you a rank and a weapon. When you load a map in practice mode, you have no weapons or rank. r gives you an M16A2 and the grenades that normally accompany the weapon. For other weapons, choose the code that matches:

r M16A2

summon agp_characters.npc_airborneinstructor: What good are weapons without anyone to shoot? This will place a practice dummy in the map directly in front of where you are standing, assuming there is enough room. The dummy will be one of those Jesus-pose dummies. This is useful to compare the number of hits it takes to kill someone. Compare shots to the head to shots to the foot. One shot to the head may kill while it may take 14 to a foot for a soldier to die.

If you dont like the airborne instructor, replace
airborneinstructor
towerobserver
towerobserverfemale
flightcrew
airbornesoldier
medinstructor
nurse
medstudent
student
drillinstructor
ambient

character

avatar agp_characters.npc_airborneinstructor: Use this after the summon command, replacing airborneinstructor with whatever character you created. This command places you into the other body. If you have more than one airborneinstructor, simply type the command again, and you will switch to the other one.

walk: This will make your pawns come to life and kill you. Be sure you are a safe distance away. If this function slows down your system, use 'killpawns' to remove the pawns.

summon agp_inventory.agp_ammopickup.agp_m67frag: Extra weapons: this command gives you more frag grenades. Replace m67frag with a number of weapons choices:

m83smoke

Using the 203 (grenade launcher) on Pipeline

This is a big one to learn. You must learn to shoot accurately with this weapon if you want to stay out of Leavenworth.

The 203 can give you a basket full of kills, but because of the wide diameter of the kill area, it can also give you a ton of ROE.

When outside, be accurate. Very accurate. From long range, if your crosshair is an inch from where it needs to be, it could mean a 20-yard difference in where the grenade lands. Do not take chances with the 203. If you arent absolutely sure about the range, wait until all your teammates clear out of the line of fire to let one go.

When you are inside, being accurate is less critical because the walls contain the grenade blast to a small area. However, you will find that your launched nades will bounce off the walls in most places, unexploded.

The trick is to know where you can fire the 203 inside. Remember, the 203 has a minimum range (14-38 meters). Technically, the round has to rotate a given number of times before it arms, so be aware you have to be far enough from the target to use the 203.

Study the maps and practice online to find where the 203 will work, and where it will bounce harmlessly off the walls.

The 203 is an awesome weapon in the right hands. On Assault, I have often been so frustrated with players that dont know how to use the 203, that I have given up my favored leadership positions to have it.

Remember, this is the most dangerous weapon (along with a grenade), because it can put you into Leavenworth with one shot. Dont shoot unless your buddies are clear.

Practice hitting the vents from the Assault Spawn area. Walk just outside the fence and crouch. Get comfortable with the aim you need to hit those vents. Some Defenses rely heavily on vent attacks, and 203s are the best way to stop them.

Practice the shot at the bottom of the map along the south road. Hitting the west wall of the south road from the oil tanks is not easy. Learn this so it wont be guess work.

Practice shots from all locations of the courtyard. Use the small buildings in the north east for cover and light up the Main Entrance Door, the North Side Door, the north road, and the vents.

Another shot to master is from the north road to the west entrance door. There is often a bad guy at the door trying to snipe you at the corner. The problem is, he may also have a 203.

Inside, practice from the Primary Valve facing down the East Maintenance Tunnel and vice-versa. Notice you can aim high. Although it looks like the grenade should hit the ceiling, it wont. Also notice that you have to back up against the wall to get the grenade to explode easily. Remember, there is a minimum distance for the 203 (14-38 meters).

Practice from the basement floor to the roof above the ladder and above the cp. Try shooting up the ladder access. Its a tough shot, but you can get a nade to explode.

Also do the reverse...practice from the top of the ladder down to the Primary Valve. This is a tricky shot to get the right distance and does take practice.

Across the catwalk on the cp roof, practice hitting the West Ladder Access, the west door, the bathroom door, and even the corridor door area. These are all great opportunities for kills. While youre up there, practice hitting the top of the ladder for the occasional OpFor who sneaks by you at the Ladder Access.

Other areas to shoot the 203 inside: the vent, North Side Entrance into the Vent Access Room, Corridor Intersection into the Main Pump Room, the Break Room down the stairs at the Main Entrance Door (you must be all the way back to the wall for this one).

Subject: Cover and Concealment

If you are difficult to see, you are difficult to kill. Simple as that.

The simplest form of concealment in Americas Army is camping. A soldier who is moving is much easier to see than one who is not moving. If you are camping, you are probably not moving and more difficult to pick up.

If you are in dark areas of a map, all the better. Keep in mind what color your uniform appears to the enemy. Most maps make you dark and camoflaged, allowing you to crouch in dark corners undetected until it is too late.

When you are hiding this way, sight your targets in carefully. Take an extra half second to aim at the head. Your rifle-burst is going to give your position away if the enemy hasnt picked you up yet, so aim carefully.

On the other hand, dont take so much time that your enemy has a chance to find you. Its a fine line between shooting too early and too late. Its better to be on the early side than be dead.

When the enemy is a great distance away, go prone. They will have a difficult time sighting you in, while you can zoom in and calmly headshot them. If you are prone before they see you, they may not even find you before you shoot them down.

Use corpses to conceal yourself. Go prone and use the body to hide behind. The enemy will nearly always think their are two corpses, not one corpse and one OpFor. Even when you open fire, he wont know which one to shoot at until it;s too late.

If you run around a corner smack into a bad guy, dont stop moving. Run around him in circles, always aiming for the head. Use the strafe keys (a & d) so you can move sideways and keep your gun sighted on him.

Use gas as concealment in tunnels. Go prone behind the gas and turn on your night vision goggles. You will be able to see through it much better and sight the enemy in through the gas.

Grab a buddy and cover each other. Your weapons should never be pointed the same direction. Cover his back and help him out when he runs out of ammo. Teams of two are very effective in AA, teams of three are also good. Bigger groups are usually good targets for the other team to nade unless they are really organized
