ordered it from play.com for 27 quid..should be ariving early next week..hopefully.

I read somewhere that its good on a LAN but not quite set up for internet play..true? Think you can dial in a ISP number..not sure how it will play over internet tbh.

Usually play on same PC with a m8. Problem is this so -called m8 tends to poach my players the complete git. ;)

Got it Friday, more of the same as you said but thats a good thing, quite like the 2D highlights although it shows up how piss poor the AI can be at times.

Its quite buggy, although I believe SI had to get it out, but its a life eater for sure.

Great line mate so true and yet so sad. :D

um.. in join network game you can select ip address of server to join, but in the manual it says Eidos does not currently support network and internet play! says visit website for more info but there's none there... looks like it's one of the options left out to get it released on time!

hopefully they'll sort it out soon :p

There were a lot of bugs on release but the new patch seems to sort most of them out.

My opinion will be pretty biased as I've played since the very first Champ Manager but I've spent more time at these games than any other, its the greatest footy sim ever IMHO.

Have you played the others mate? This one is quite different. More detailed and its quite tough keeping up with a lot of what you have to do. Training has recieved one of the biggest facelifts. Lots of options here. There is supposed to be an option to let your assistant handle the training but it dosen't seem to be working so its all down to you.

The new 2D engine is quite fun as well, adds a bit of interest.

Overall its top banana.

mmm.. if its multiplayer i like the sound of it, played CM2 for ages. Ive a hankering for emulating West Broms forthcoming plummet through the leagues to the Conference and then have them soundly thrashed by Stevenage Borough :)

My first move to achieve this goal would be to buy Emil Hesky.

An observation.....

Just want to share this observation with peeps....

OK. Have one copy of CM4 installed on 3 systems, set up as a LAN. I have the latest patch installed, ver 4.0.3.

The systems are Win XP Pro on 2200 AMD with 512 memory; Win 98SE on 850 AMD with 1024 memory and Win 98 on AMD 333 with 256 memory.

Firstly you only need the disk on initial start of the game. So you can have a huge lan set up and only need one disk, providing your all in the same room/house.

I set up one league, the English from Conference and above, with the 2200 acting as the server.

The AMD 333 ran the game with no problems. True there was some lag and there was a delay of a few seconds but generally the 333 worked fine. Good to know for low end systems. The high ram obviously is the main factor here.

On setting the LAN up, make sure you refresh the connection on the CM4 game status page, as by default the game seems to give out an odd IP address initially.

The only issue that we found (had a few m8's over to test/play), was that during match day, the Win 98SE version seemed to forget about the LAN and play its own match.

One game for example, shown on both the Win 98 and Win XP systems, had a 2-1 defeat (can't remember the teams), where as on the Win 98SE system the game was a draw, with different scores and times.

Also the game crashed on the Win 98SE system at the end of each game, IF the other systems where also viewing the same game. When we left the other systems on 'latest scores' this issue seemed to be resolved. Otherwise, we had to restart and join the LAN game, as after a while CM4 wasnt responding on the Win98SE system.

Looking at the back of the box, it does say that the game is compatible with Windows 98/XP. There must be some issue, maybe, with Win 98SE version. Not sure.

I didnt notice any bugs apart from maybe this one.

I shall upgarde the Win98SE to XP and see if that was causing the issue.

The game is fun, and having not played for well over a year, I found it refreshing. The 2D match is a brilliant addition and really adds to the game in my view.

Unfortunately I took Hull to start with and the board want me to win the division. Not looking good at present with 1 win, 2 defeats and 1 draw. Think I'll have to jump ship and take a club with less expectations. Havent played CM is a long while so a little rusty :)

One of my m8's took Cambridge and is 3rd in the table, the complete smeg and my other m8 took Hartlepool and is currently 3rd of the bottom. Not so good.

Overall good fun was had by all.

Enjoying it a lot.

Some of the bugs I've come across are the captain changing one which was addressed in the patch and it still keeps telling me I've been knocked out of the Champs League when I have qualified.

There are some game issues that I'd like to see addressed in a patch.

My Arsenal game is going ok at the moment but it took three attempts to get it right (I got sacked the other times).

The problem is is that although the board expect me to win the title, it also seems to mean that you have to be top all the time. I was sacked after being second as all of the players were unhappy and had low morale becasue we weren't top. I don't mind being sacked if I'm fifteenth, but not second with still a quarter of the season to go. I played as ManU (Pfftt) to see if it was just the moany french lot at the Arsenal and got the same thing, so that probably needs adjusting a bit.

Players don't seem to have as much as impact on the game as do tactics and formation. With the right tactics I've thrashed Barcelona, Madrid etc without a lot of my top players, so it all seems down to that rather than the players skills.

Also seems hard to change a game if you are doing poorly. I've scored a couple of goals by going gung-ho or changing formation when the game hasn't been going my way but 99 times out of 100, if I'm doing poorly, its hard to turn the game around.

Great stuff though. Anyone come up with any good tactics? my old CM01/02 formation has been doing good for me recently.

^-------FC--------^
^--AMC---AMC---^
^-----------------^
ML---------------MR
------^-----^------
-----DMC^DMC----
---------^----------
----DC--DC--DC---

Or something like that. AMC's must have good pace.

Interesting Tree.....

I am using my old CM (amiga) style of 4-3-1-2.

Basically 3 in central midfield with two ball winners and one creative chappie and then two forwards and an AMC just sitting behind.

Havent had chance to really spend a good deal of time on this game yet, need a season or two behind me I reckon.

Midfield seems to be the key. Win that and you should do well.

aye - I've ended up playing a 4-5-1 style and although it's slightly defensive I always score lots of goals - so midfield is the key :) I just keep winning!

Second season, played 18, won 16, lost 1 drawn 1. Working so far but last few games have been close. May need to mix it a bit with the tactics as I'm starting to get found out I think.

Tried to buy Owen but 'Pool having none of it, going for Figo next. :D

Well.... I think it shows that I havent played this game in a long while. :)

Playing Hartlepool at present, finished 14th in first season, which isnt too bad. Managed to snaffle a few decent peeps on free transfers and had a brilliant start (or so i thought) to the 2nd season with 4 friendly wins and a draw, including a 2v1 win against Sheffield Weds.

Then the season started.......

3 essential players out injured before the first game.....won 1 drew 1 and lost 4 out of first 6 games played.

25-1 to win promotion by the bookies and the board expect a safe mid table finish. Hhmmm.....

Discussed tactics with a m8 who suggested I check playing style, as I know passing style in lower league in previous incarnations of the game tend to be a good way to be sacked early.....unless you have the players to pull it off.

Guess what, yip, mixed style.

Changed to 4-3-3, direct ball through the middle. Won next game at home 1-0. then came back in the league cup against Cardiff (1st Div) from 2-0 down with 15 mins to go to win 3-2, after some really big cockups by Barron, my DC (he was substituted at halftime and given a sever talking too I can tell ya :)

The next game i won 3-0 away to Exeter who where 5th.

Early days I know, but all of a sudden a big improvement in the performance of the team.

I can remember way back in CM2 playing passing style in the 3rd division and after 13 striaght defeats changing to direct ball and started winning games. Aye, you can do it with passing style, but you really need good passing players.

Again, have to say the 2D match is just brilliant. It really adds to the tension. Great addition.

Oh, on a side note. In the first season Liverpool beat Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Cup final. Then prompty sacked Houlier for being a frenchman. Appharently finishing 6th wasnt good enough, even after winning the FA Cup.
