I was thinking about finally quitting WoW but the new expansion looks awesome.

So I signed up for another year to get a free copy of D3. Collectors edition looks pretty good but not enough to justify buying.

Had a quick nose in Amazon to see what it was and I think I should get myself a Diablo III mouse at a mere 55 quid and the Diablo III headphones for 75 quid, especially as it tells me its got and I quote "Optimized soundscape specific for Diablo gameplay" *cough snigger* ok maybe not :D
I could have swallowed the 'they look cool' aspect but that was a bit much.

I just bought the kids the Kung-Fu Panda double DVD pack for Christmas, hell of a lot cheaper and 100% more replay value :p

After writing that I spent the next hour seriously considering buying another year's worth of WoW, especially considering that they let you do monthly billing to qualify. If it had been a year ago I'd be in but chances are I'll be without internet for a couple of months at least through that year so it aint worth it :(

/adds banana Nesquik to the milk :p

Was talking to Phoenix today at work about WoW and I have to say my cynical muscle is twitching. Why would they need to bribe you with DIII to get a years subscription?

tis a bit odd isnt it.
being cynical, to me it implies one of 2 things:
they dont think WoW is good enough to sell on its own merits.
they dont think Diablo 3 is good enough to sell on its own merits.

now, i think the real point is, they know that the way things were going they were going to lose 50% of their subscribers for a month or 3 while they all went and played D3 - and by doing this it means that people can more easily afford to play both wow and d3, and thus their subscriber numbers wont take a massive hit (the problem with a massive 'temporary' hit like that being that not all people will return, especially once you consider the number of raid guilds that get screwed by it).

so yeah, i dunno, can see it either way i guess.

was just about to write a rant about how i wanted the CE of D3, and wouldnt be able to benefit fully from buying a years subscription and how this is screwing over their most spend-happy customers... and then i read this:
What if I purchase the Diablo III Collector's Edition?
If you decide to purchase the Diablo III Collector's Edition when it's available, and then choose to add your Collector's Edition license key to the Battle.net account associated with your existing World of Warcraft Annual Pass promotion, you will receive all of the benefits associated with the Collector's Edition, plus receive four months of World of Warcraft game time which is eligible towards your 12-month subscription commitment. After you purchase the Diablo III Collector's Edition you just need to input the product key into the Battle.net account associated with your World of Warcraft 12-month commitment and that account will then receive the next 4 months of World of Warcraft game time for free. For example, if you already had a month of game time on the associated World of Warcraft account when you input your Diablo III Collector's Edition product key, it would then be 5 months until your next subscription payment was due.

so essentially, if you get the CE, it swaps your free D3 for 4 months of wow-time. seems fair tbh.

I was talking to a guy at work about this, I don't think they're that bothered, sub's don't seem to be down too much.

What I think it is, is getting players to commit to WoW for more than just a month... you know, with SWoR coming soon, I think its just trying to keep players around, since I don't think the new WoW expansion or D3 are going to hit until a while after thats out.

exactly. and they cant, really, afford to lose people for a few months to play something else - because then those peoples freinds leave too, or they dont come back, etc. if they can keep them playing, even if just once a week, then all the better.

... or the previous games on a USB stick really - interesting gimmick but no huge bonus since for existing players since Blizzard already hold a digital copy of D2 in addition to any physical copy. Now if it came with a basic copy of SC2, that would be different

The only crap thing about the USB stick was the fact you couldn't play it from the USB stick :(

I still have the original D2 and LOD CD's. Just re-housed them into the newer style CD cases

Maybe it will have the original and D2 on it, SC2 CE had the original on the USB

Only thing that surprises me is why people are even debating the fact that a company is using a gimmick to try and maintain it's revenue stream.

I want to play the WoW expansion and I want to play D3 so I signed up.

If you don't like it, don't do it.

I wouldn't even say its a gimmick. Its a valid strategy nowadays. You got early access to the beta of BF3 if you bought the most recent Medal of Honour game. I've seen other such offers about as well.

I just find it difficult to think that WoW is "struggling" and using such offers to keep players. I'd expect to see servers shutting down/merging if they were.
