Computer fritze dtoday, bluescreens beforewindows can load even in safe mode. The bluescrrenn message is

Unmountable_boot_Volume and the 0x000000ed, 0x8a647900.

evrything I've seen online is pointing to hard drive failiure?

So I types in IDE hard drive and all kind of stuff is coming up, and its totally confusing me. Can anyone point me at a 500g or at least 350g IDE drive please? Hopefuly one that i can just replace the old one with, minimal fuss?

TIA

If you just want something cheap to get you running again bud try this

But the techy part of me cant resist tempting you to try out Solid state drives. I'm no salesman but after i bought one and used it.. the feeling was akin to switching from square wheels to round ones. It is a simple "oh this is clearly better in every way" sort of feeling.

However they are around 50p per gig unless you need 250gig+ then they get a bit cheaper.

edit - btw did you mean to say "can't load even in safe mode"?

dont think there are any IDE SSD's out there mate, they tend to be SATA.

how old is that PC Cull? Sata has been the norm for 8 or 9 years now i reckon, maybe longer. I take it IDE drives will still be available, but probably at a premium.

Mutley !!
It's going to be difficult to get such a large IDE HDD now, as its old technology and not really supported on new hardware anymore . Google the motherboard and see if it has a sata interface.

If it's really PATA that you're after I might have one in the loft, it would probably be something like 160GB though. Don't think I've used anything but SATA for at least 6 or 7 years.

I did notice 4 sata entries in the bios - will look again. Yess Emmon, i cant even get it in to safe mode. And I even tried putting widows disc in and selecting my dvd player to boot from in case I could repair it, but the damn thing still just tries to load in windows.

On hoary old laptop at the mo.

You should be able to tell from the cables - PATA vs SATA

Doh! yup its Sata II. How hard is it to install windows on a new drive? Just a case of putting the dik in and going with it?

worst case scenario is the motherboard needs a SATA controller driver disk before it will recognise the drive but thanks to you having that laptop that problem becomes manageable no probs.

but yeah, plug in and install windows.

Do you have knowledge of using a BIOS to set a boot order?

Yeah I can change boot order in the Bios, no problems. What if I buy a new dvd drive at the same time - install that first, then the new HD, then insert the windows disk and go?

Or shall i dispatch a flock of pigeons with pictures of rare drops on them and a bucket of pasties?

Just say the word and they'll be in Tyne and Wear by midnight

Well; drives came from scan yesterday so I fitted them in no probs. Installed winows xp home, not without problems, about 3.4 of the way through it claimed that it couldnt install a file that looked like "xpkrpemp" or summat like that (forgot to write it down), though at the end it came up windows installed succesfully. Found the motherboard disc with various drivers on so installed them. After a lot of faffing got the internet working and checked the device manager - only one big yellow ?, which I knew would be the graphics card so I went and downloaded a driver for it (9500gt) - says its the latest driver but its dated 2008. Seems to work tho. So far so good.
Tried updating windows but the copy of explorer that was on was version 6, and the bloodyn thing wouldnt update at all. Tried various fixes for a couple of hours - nothing worked and my already severely nude head lost what remaining hair it had due to me tearing it out. Wouldnt even let me install a newer version of IE. Then in desperation downloaded service pack 3 manualy and installed it and bobs yer uncle - it worked.

State of play now is me getting all my proggys like VLC, Avira and Utorrent etc. Either the new hd or the fan on my motherboard is making a hell of a racket, I can live with that. Card reader is as dead as a doornail, no idea if it just needs drivers or I have inadvertantly unpluged summat inside. No mention of it in the device manager. Going to watch the temp of the processor in bios and see if I need to do anything there. Unless you know some proggy i can download free that will monitor temp?

Update: Cpu 42 degrees centigrade
MB 33 degrees Centigrade

this is ok yeah?

first off, those temps are fine bud. No danger of something melting or going pop.

The harddrive may be making the noise you hear, my 2 harddrives that i used to use before i upgraded didnt have windows on them, just used them as storage but when i accessed them to run a file you could hear them "power up" as they started spinning.. though they were over 10 years old.

Its possible your new harddrive spins fast and noisy because of a side-effect of being large and needing to be fast enough to compete against other drives, never had a drive that large so i dont know for sure.

Card reader not showing up could be anything, need some human diagnostic tests to find out exactly what that is (connector loose / usb slot fault / wire damaged etc) though if it isnt showing up.. it's not a software problem.

Regarding a temperature monitoring program these are small, trustworthy and free:

http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/

http://alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

I prefer the CoreTemp interface a little more but both are good at what they do.

Started hearing that low, rythymic break in the general "hum" that means a fan is on the way out. Will find out which one and I will have to replace it. If its the power pack again that's not so bad, done one before. But if its the one on the CPU will have to get my mate from next door - found out he used to build pcs so he might nave a clue.

Bugger this. Whole system is unstable. Path of Exile crashes every time - the graphics go all strange. Firefox has crashed and wont resetart so I have had to uninstall it.. Other programs are randomly crashing. Only option is to start again and reinstall windows.
