As this is the brand spanking new book forum lets start with the classic :

What's anyone reading...?

I've working though Stephen Kings 'Different Seasons' again - I wanted to compare 'Shawshank' the film to the book.

In my to read soon pile i've got 'Lisey's Story' Stephen Kings latest novel. 'Proven Guilty' by Jim Butcher (a Harry Dresden Novel volume 7). 'Chart Throb' by Ben Elton , been putting this off as I think it'll be poor. 'On Beauty' by Zadie Smith - the follow on to 'White Teeth'.

Oh yeah and as this will be fantasy a genre I don't really enjoy much I'll recommend Kelley Armstrong - 'Bitten' and 'Stolen' double and 'Dimestore Magic' and 'Inductrial Magic' double (each pairing has a different main progatonist).

And Finally anyone who like Anita Blake and wonder what you'd get if you crossed her with Lara Croft should try out 'Marianne De Pierres' - Parrish Plessis' books - only 2 so far (as far as I know) 'Nylon Angel' and 'Code Noir' good OTT fun.

Just finished Gordon Ramsays autobiog. Tried to read Erragon but couldnt get 5 pages in - not for me. Awaiting the next George RR Martin and am going to read Jonathan Strange and MR Norrell again, seems one of those books that you pick up new shades and nuances after further reads.

PVC Love God
Seven Ages of Paris. Nonfiction history of Paris from Roman times to 1945. It's very good but also a bit of a pocket buster at 900 odd pages. Last fiction books I read were Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway and The Best of Roald Dahl (I get a lot of time to read on aeroplanes these days).

Smoke and Mirrors - Neil Gaiman. Collection of short stories. Not read much yet, but it seems good (though odd :p so far).
cull - I quite enjoyed Eragon, though i'm told the film's atrocious. (my brother left halfway through, and he happily watches some truly awful stuff.)

Pop up Kama Sutra....oops no that was the last one :D

Just finished Kathy Reichs book Break No Bones.

Got loads of crime/thriller/sci fi books to read. Just need the time to read them all :)

Just finished Stephen King's - Cell, 2nd time of reading and enjoyed it even more.

Have just started to read Lisey's Story but am tempted with Magician, been meaning to read it for years. And, as I have broken my right arm, I have plenty of time free :(

I have 4 books on my desk at the mo, Stephen Donaldsons The runes of the Earth, its a pile of crap so have given up on it. A star wars book called exile. Anansi Boys by Neil gainmon, not started it yet. And the speed reading book by tony buzan which, despite what the title says, is slow going to be honest.

Just got myself up to date with my National Geographic mags - been a bit too busy to read 'em recently, so that's been my stuff for the last week.

Currently reading a report from the BBFC about "Research to improve understanding of what players enjoy about video games, and to explain their preferences for particular games". Goes into detail about the endless arguments about violence, etc.

Loved the first half. Thought it when downhill in the second half when the zombie started evolving and the whole Raggety Man felt somewhat like The Stand. Still decent though.

Anansi Boys is a cracking read.. well all Gaiman Really, not read a bad one yet.

American Gods is pretty boring to be honest, it's the only one I wouldn't read again at some point.

I loved American Gods! Great characters and some of the ideas about what and how stuff becomes mythic - for example, the old guy at the lake - very thought provoking.

I found it way to bloated and the climax was just well, an huge anticlimax.

In all 3 Gaiman novels i've read (Neverwhere, Anansi Boys and American Gods) i've always found the main proganonist too unreactive to the strange situations that go on around, they are always protrayed as your average 'joe bloggs' who gets caught up in the mess. Yet I always get annoyed by how they just accept the wierd stuff without even trying to work it out. It didn't bother me so much in Neverwhere and Anansi because the stories were quick, easy and fun.

Wrong.

I've jsut finished re-reading King Rat which si a spectacularly dark enactment of 'what happened after the Piper left Hamil{thingy}. Bleak, engaging and set in London. Perfect.

Just before that, Ken MacLeod's latest novel, "The Execution Chanel" is easily one of his best works to date. Certainly up there with The Cassini Division / Stone Canal.

Hmm, i've forgotten the rest, I'll dig out a list of hot sci-fi soon - promise.

With the Benedictine monks.
I've read all of Feist's stuff up to date and im waiting on him writing another one!!

Re-reading the wee-free men and hat full of sky and wintersmith for a laugh. :)

Just finished Phantom by Terry Goodkind and Armageddon's Children by Terry Brooks.

Almost finished Geomancer by Ian Irvine and then I have Into A Dark Realm by Raymond E. Feist to start.

Stupid is as stupid does
Just read FAT by some dude I can't remember. Pretty funny in a black comedy kind of way.

Books I'd recommend:

Player of Games - Iain M. Banks
Invisible Monsters - Chuck Palaniuk
The Godfather - Mario Puzo
Walking on Glass - Ian Banks
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert Heinlein
Faery Tale - Raymond Feist

Too busy to think of others right now but I've got a zillion books at home so I'll have a look tonight and remember what is a good read.
