Ok folks I think its pretty obvious by now that we have a bit of a following for Battlefield and not enough hardware behind it to allow us all to play at the same time (without a lot of gamespy searching and whantnot)

So I've been thinking (along with Roch), we've had this idea in the past and it never really came to fruition, so here it is.

We get a dedicated (or hired) server.

Basically we have two options:

1) Everyone who wishes to play puts a bit of money in and we buy or own dedicated servah from somewhere like Jolt or someplace else, they all do the same kinda deal costing about 65 a month for a dedicated server that we can play on whenever we feel like it.

2) Blueyonder also do a service like Barrysworld used to where you can book a server, it costs 10 a month and you get credits to book servers with (1600 credits at present) the only downside to this I can see so far is that we will have to book a night a week and have time slots to adhere to, it will cost less but trying to get a bunch of us to be able to play in the same palce at the same time is nigh on impossible as out counterstrike days proved.

Anyway please vote for one of the 4 options above so we can get a rough gauge on what you think would be the best way forward.

I would suggest voting for the expensive option ONLY if you're willing to chip in a share of the running costs :D

I'd personally like to see the dedicated server idea... if we can get enough peeps that want in.

Elarion is looking to re-build the server "SheepWorld" tm at our flat with more memory etc just for dedicated game hosting. So that's another idea to try in the next week or so..

Not tried this game. It must be damn good if people are talking about paying money for a hosting service though...

How many clan types play this then?

Oops forgot to mention something else.

Basically the call for blueyonder account holders in Clanchat is due to the fact we will need someone with a blueyonder account to do the blueyonder stuff (although they won't physically have to be there it's just a log in name\password to book and fire up the server).

So if anyone feels like offering their services (or account) then we would appreciate it if the idea goes ahead and the BY verison is chosen

Elarion's server is: P2 350, 192MB ram atm, Windows 2000 server, ADSL 512K connection. Not in the blueyonder area tho :(

It runs fine up to a point whence it crashes with a memory failure. So the idea is get another 256mb ram in it, format it as a server just for games..

Am going to upgrade my PC soon so it can have my hand-me-downs - better processor etc..

I think thats under spec for a battlefield dedicated server :(

What I've been running the last couple of nights is a dedicated server using one cpu and the client running on the other cpu on a dual athlon 1600+ system and it seems to run ok up to about 6 people. This is on a standard home ADSL connection so it's 512kb/s down and 256kb/s up.

Could always use this as an excuse to upgrade the CPUs I suppose, but I don't think thats the bottleneck :)

I was just thinking that may be ok for most nights but like last night as soon as the 6th player got onto the server all hell breaks loose, lag spikes etc etc.

hence the talk of a dedicated server, we need to get something big so we can all play, have challenges etc etc....

yer.. Omaha is gonna be sweet with a load of us... we need to keep it historically correct tho.... 31 of us on the allied side and Phil on the Krauts ... We can call it The Shortest Game rather than The Longest Day :)

Right yeah If were ever going to be playing games with the full game ( out sept 10th ) even Roch whos got best spec in CUK I think... his ran 5 ace but not quite 6, so if were serious yeah I say we go dedicated.

If and when we do I suggest a Barrysworld one. I'll go look up what they offer now

At 80 or 95 a month for a barry's server I'm thinking that might be a bit steep.

I don't mind forking out 5-10 a month for a dedicated server so long as I can get a l33t connection to it with my Tin Can & Bailer Twine connection.

I'd chip in for a dedicated.

BTW, how are we currently meeting up to play? I hate fooking Game****e.

We host our own server m8, either el's sheepworld or I host one on my machine.

We'll have to see how it goes with up to 8 users, those lag spikes may have been a one off. We need to do more testing.

This patch might help as well.

i.p / pass is sent over in a icq msg, then go to the ingame server browser, click add server, type it in and click join.. pop pass in and away.

Oh and i dont mind chipping in about a fiver a month too ( i dont get much :) )
