Sony's big announcement at GDC

Click

Did Kotaku hit a nerve ?
Are they spot on ?
Are PS3 owners really going to be very happy about getting a mix of Ninendo Mii's and X-box achievements ?

Sony and Kotaku all made up now but I was pretty suprised Sony was so heavy handed

I'm with Sony on this one tbh. They are obviously looking forward to the announcement and if they have worked closely with Kotaku in the past then a request for silence on a big announcement is not unreasonable.

/drool, sounds like a mix between mad machine and Spore :) I like the sound of that alot !

Home sounds far too much like Sims online and doesn't sound like it really captures what live and achievements are, but until it's released it's hard to really tell

Do people reckon that the software upscaling functionality is genuine, or just Sony marketing bullshit to try to cover their arses for removing hardware emulation and STILL charging European consumers more for the console?

Harrison has stated 1,000 titles on launch which is about half of the PS2 euro library with more to come via updates. The only problem I have with this is that the list is not available officially until the 23rd although I guess people can wait to see the list before commiting to collection their PS3.

Rumours are that some of the newer titles may upscale to 720p. If this happens for titles like FFXII and God Of War 2 thats a huge selling point.

Been using live with my "other clan".

Its absolutely rubbish if you have more than one person you want to play with, I don't know why people rave about it. Its lightyears behind any pc fps

Hoping Sony realise that some people know more than one person.

Home in action on Kotaku

Home again, faster link

And with Live surely it's just a different way of playing, find one person of the group online playing, join them, hey presto there is everyone else. Not really sure how it's different than a PC in that respect unless that thing that tracks friends playing has improved a whole load.

Dunno though I've only every found single friends and joined/played over live with them, so never actually tried to find a "group", I just assume everyone will be in the same game ?

And while I know I'm seen as Nintendo Fanboy please tell me I'm not the only one who'd like to carry a chainsaw with me in PSN Home to kill anyone I see dancing ? :)

Re: Live

It tends not to be that way, you end up joining random 8 player instances. Can be very hard to get all your friends in one instance. Alot of this is down to the game, but Live itself is not geared towards clans or groups.

What lets it down mostly is the voice comms, You can either have game comms, where you talk to everyone in the same instance as you or single player to player.

We end up using ventrilo and our PC headsets.

But I thought Live did you let join a friend playing ?

Of course the other way is host a game with a password on it so only you peeps can get in.

Well I'll be getting a 360 once Forza 2 is out (and getting worms which is out now on Live !!!) so I'll see for myself again then. Though as the reason I'm getting the 360 is for Forza 2 mainly to be played with 2 friends hopefully I'll never come across the problems you and the clan are having Morgyn :)

P.S A group of X-box-ites at NextGenWars every week do a Live session which seems to always go down well and work well, if you want I'll find out how they organise it and let you know ?

Just watched the whole Sony GDC keynote and I have to say that Home is very impressive. It goes far beyond what Live offers to a degree where its a generation or two ahead. The customisation and things you can do are just amazing.

The only negative is when would you find the time to play the actual games but when you look at the popularity of Sims and Myspace etc then this will sell the PS3 on its own to a certain audience.

RE: Live

A single friend, yes. but when you are trying to get 5 people in the same instance it can take 20 minutes. When each round is 5 minutes or less, you can understand my frustration.

I've not found a game that supports passwords yet.

Hmm I thought Live supported clans now, and I know Forza let me have a password to a game, I figured it was a general one, and I don't think the leader of a game can kick people ... I see the problem now. Hmm I'll ask on NGW, see if there is something different they do as it sounded like they invited people rather than anyone could just join (this was in Gears)

And Home does look nice but I'm not convinced it offers "more" than live, Home is I'd say simply an interface to PSN and Live's interface is a far simpler one, but also allows things like comparing achievments, quickly looking at achievements, something which in Home I can't see how you would compare or how you could quickly see achievements without going out of the game, into Home, walking to there house, going into there "Achievement room" and looking. Don't get me wrong, as a game in it's own right Home I've no doubt will be fun, but as an interface to network games I've yet to be convinced.

In what Morgyn is talking about though I can see while Live isn't doing it right and you pay for it, but in Home I assume you could all just agree to meet in Morgyns room and if you wanted to join goto Morgyns room to join in (which is kinda how I thought Live worked)

According to someone on NGW, when I asked:

A group of 6 friends want to meet up in the same game on live and play
1) What's the best way to do this
2) Can they limit it to just them playing
3) If an idiot joins can the person running the game kick them

The answer was:
1) Game Invites Press Xbox Guide Button
2) Yes, most games have private slots, or you can just boot anyone that tries to join your party.
3) Yes, see 2

Not sure if that helps, but there ya go

Check out the Warhawk video on kotaku.com. Looks bags of multiplayer fun.

If Mario Galaxy is anything like the trailer then it'll be worth owning a Wii for alone.
