The book they tried too ban!

It's a expose on the paramilitary wing of the Church of Scientology - effectively their enforcers... It's a bit tricky to get hold of as amazon, watersrtoens etc removed it from their product listings recently due too "unspecified reasons" I wonder what they could be?

ANyway i've mewnagaed to find a place in ireland that is happy to sell it too you and shoip it over here. Not started reading it yet but it's next on my list after reading altered carbon.
Again :)

One is intrigued, religious nuts always worry me but Scientology always came across as a scam and it baffles and concerns me why folk seem to get caught up in it.
You have to give us a review when you do read it :) If it becomes hard to get a hold of you can start renting it out *grin*

On the plus side, Germany has outlawed them, or is about too, and most of europe is too follow suit :)

Fantastic! (on the outlawing) not that surprised at Becks considering they were in cahoots with the Cruises.

I think the unwashed one means Beck the musician.

The whole 'Anti' Religious nonsense is just as baffling too me as Religious nonsense, to be honest :p

Aha, wasn't aware of it being that Beck. You can't get anti-religious nonsense, its the truth *grin*.

I'm not anti religion per se, I'm anti cults who prey on the weak-minded and gullible who aren't above political manipulation, kidnap, brainwashing, and murder.

So no, not a fan of Scientology. :)

ahhh so basically you're against all religion then ?

Which I think is the point Janie is trying to get across

That's a nice bigoted attitude, Gottaa. :D

There are some religions which are pretty benign. Buddhists, for example, aren't well known for their murdering. ;)

Also, I fear Janie means quite the opposite. Fanaticism isn't limited to the religious.

I agree that it does get a bit silly but that it usually because you tend to have such strong opinions and basically your in a situation where one lot are trying to prove something utterly intangible exists and the other is in the difficult situation of proving something doesn't exist.

The norm is to prove something does exist with tangible evidence, which is much easier :)

I don't have a problem with religions either, well, no more than a general low grade "wtf - seriously..." Cults are as far removed from normal religious life as flies are from crocodiles.

By cult I am infering an organisation specifically engineered to remove wealth and control from their followers and place it in the hands of the leaders, not in the sence of christianity where you simply believe in a book and occasionally give away money, Whilst there are varying degrees of this depending on weather you are evangelical tralor-trash sucked in by a preacher or a flat-cap wearing old duffer in a countryside yorkshire church giving 50p a week to the collection tray; or even a Jewish North London Property Mogul giving away his 10%

This is something completely different and definately scary.

The first couple of chapters have given a overview of the indoctrination and training techniques used to take a normal person and turn them into, literally, a robot, an extension of the will of others, using a varying pitch of repetition training, hyprnosis, cognative sugestion and other weird stuff I can't pretend too understand. It reads like Sci-Fi, and if it's trye (yes, if...) it's bloody terrifying the number of these nutters there are out there. And for only $120,000 you can advance to the next level.

Of Course, the Book Could Just Be Another BrainWashing Technique.

It does sound like an interesting book, in the same way I'm pretty sure if you read about the origins of many currently accepted religions you'd also be pretty shocked by the kind of things that were done.

Church of England is one which always confuses me, as it basically came around so Henry could get married again as the Pope at the time wouldn't let him do what he wanted. That could be oversimplified but from all I've read that's the case isn't it ?

It is not about "the origins" - they are well documented. Sci-Fi writer decides to make money so starts a religious cult. The Henry VIII thing is neatly summarised by the film "The Other Bolyn Daughter" by he way - probably just up your alley.

*Over lunch they have been talking about the "punishment" routines if you fail to be easily and pliantly indoctrinated by showing any deviation from accepted "Ethics" (eg if you think for your self rather than LRH tells you tho think) you get sent to a scientologist run prison camp for 5 years of hard labor.
No Shit!
