Any MMO that starts the intro sequence with a dude introing you to one of his DnD group members and extolling the virtues of roleplaying has got to be fun :)

Is anyone actually playing this? I've been in the closed beta since March and Early Access since last Friday- it's a lot of fun.

just started today on Daemon shard : Zara Mountfitchett in honour of an old PotBS name (and because my fist choice of nickname was gone)

I'm on Arcadia but that's not important as you can freely move between dimensions to join up with anyone.

This is a nice n complex character development process which right now i have little to no idea on

Was in closed beta and tried the early start last friday. I am neither here or there about this mmo, its very pretty and the skill system is nice, but I just dont think it has the longevity to move it forward.

Some of the quests are real puzzles and you need to your thinking cap on, unfortunately some quest were badly bugged last week so you werent able to complete them. (white raven and MIB van) as examples.

I can see this mmo will be forgotten about in 12 months time, it just doesnt have that grab-ya-attention feel to it.

If you are looking for something different other than dwarves and orcs then it might be worth a look.

What appeals to me is the occult nature of the game. I think ive found a build that works for the short term at least.

the game is okay, it has some nice / new elements and some basic stuff....

i've decided to leave it a month or 3 and see if anyones still playing it. this technique served me well with Brink, and wouldve saved me a bit of cash if i'd applied it to... every mmo other than wow, really :p.

Yeah the MIBVs and white ravens are annoying- I'd imagine the one in Egypt will be equally frustrating as it took me ages- all three depend on only one person entering the sequence correctly at once- the last time I tried the MIBV one there were 30 people standing around the device all trying to shut it down. Open chat was a cornucopia of swearing and abuse.

I am not sure whether this game is for me. Based on the glowing reviews of a friend, I bought the game, but I can't help be frustrated more than anything.

The combat is slow, slow, slow. In a one on one fight with an even con mob you can spend over a minute of slooooooowly pressing the same 3 buttons over and over until either you or the monster is dead. Even when you get multiple weak enemies, it takes a good amount of time to kill them.

And there better not be an add, because then I die. Running away mostly does not help, either, the mobs are just as quick as me and seem to follow people a fairly long way.

I started a second char and I can already not force myself to repeat those quests. I seriously considered continueing a char I do not enjoy playing because he is 30 quests ahead of a character that seems more fun. At least in the beginning. I don't know. The Atmosphere is great, but if I had to sum up the gameplay with one word, I would say "tedious" and that's not something people should strive for in a game. ;-)

I dont get this, Mind you im still only in kingsmouth but nothing yet has lasted a minute against my AR/Blades build. Either it dies quick or i get it wrong and die quick.

Gimmie a shout in game - Zedanya and we can team up if you like see whats going on.

I find slowly pottering around to be great fun. Aiming to finish off my 60 point build then going to diversify for a bit

I'm really liking the game to be honest, its much slower than normal RPG's, but I think it depends on your perception. If you're looking at just getting through it to get better, then it'll feel like a right old grind. If you actually like reading lore and exploring a bit then its a goodun. My only concern is going through it again with another char, I imagine there isn't many path's through the game yet.

There was a live Q&A on twitch with the designer though, I've forgotten his name, but he seems really quite cool about the whole thing, makes me want to stick with it for at least a few months to see how things end up.

I dont think the game really warrants alts unless you only want to do it to see the other Secret societies since you can earn all the skills in the game

I have a Blades / Blood build, but the dps I do is abyssmal. Things improved after I moved on from my QL2 / QL0 combo to QL4/QL3, because I did not glance that much anymore. But combat is still fairly slow. I tried to do the Hulk Smash mission and did not get anywhere because I was constantly fighting respawning adds.

I chose Blood for the self healing aspect, but my best heal gives me a ward for 5% of my HP and heals me for 5%, which makes me wonder how many healers a group is supposed to have when you fight boss mobs. Things improve with gear upgrades, but the best drop I have seen so far is QL3. I could wear QL5 in any slot, darn shame I don't see any.

The atmosphere and storyline are great, but there is still a great level of frustration involved in this game. For example, I have 25 AP and literally nothing to spend it on because all the skills seem mostly the same. I could purchase 6 different AEs all doing essentially the same thing. A friend has the same problem. A lot of AP to spend but nothing that yells out "buy me" or seems a must have. All attacks have fairly low damage and the more expensive ones don't seem much better than the ones I started with, so why bother?

I dunno, this is a weird, weird game.

I know what you mean by the skills, but do you have any +healing abilities stuff on your items? I put some of that on, and it increased my healing loads! I use blood healing too.

The abilities show their base damage, which doesn't include any modifiers, I think its meant to be like guild wars and to an extent diablo 3. Where the top end abilities aren't neccesarily the strongest, but can be more useful. Although the elite skills do seem to pack a mighty punch.

I'm enjoying the game mostly for the storyline and the world, its a given in MMO's that you'll have to grind, but the story arc in this game is well thought out and pretty epic.

I'm going to give a few months chance to sort itself out, theres promise of monthly content updates and what not, so I'll see if they live up to their promises. I'm not expecting a 100% perfect game, especially with MMO's, and I've read far too many reviews of people saying "it doesn't do this/this/this/this as well as WoW". If you're undecided, I'd say give it a couple of months and then check it out.

I think this game requires you to spend a lot of time figuring out your builds. Especially since its designed to let you have every single skill available eventually.

Its a ball ache but you need to figure out synergies and look for the ways in which different skills trigger off each other. im currently running a Blade/AR build which can hold its own with QL1/Ql2 gear in kingsmouth whilst at the same time starting to build a Blood/Claw build that can offer an alternative healing based playstyle.

my Blades/AR build focuses on massive AoE damage triggering lots of self heals. It needs improving as it is an inner wheel build only mind you.

The thing i enjoy though is the way the various missions play out. Its kind of interesting with the browser open surfing the internet looking for a dead guys password which only hint you get is : my wife! The fact that Funcom have registered and created loads of real websites for the game is great

So ive found a superb (i think) blog that really explains and explores how this game actually works.

For instance i see this:

the central theme of any given build/deck

The strongest deck designs are tightly focused, and based around amplifying only 2-3 combat stats. The basic approach is very simple:

  • Pick two weapons that have active abilities that revolve around your chosen 2-3 stats that you want to amplify.
  • Look through all the passive abilities available in the entire Ability Wheel for any passive that can synergize with both your chosen 2-3 stats AND with the attack subtypes (Frenzy, Strike, Blast, Focus, etc.) that your two weapons specialize in.
  • One of your active abilities should always be a resource builder that will build resources for both weapons. This should be the hardest-hitting builder you've unlocked so farand ideally it should also be listed as a subtype so that you can proc a subtype synergy or two with every single builder attack in your combat rotation.
  • Two of your active abilities should always be the hardest-hitting resource consumers you've unlocked so far and ideally also listed as subtypes so you can proc a subtype synergy with every consumer. One of these consumers should be for weapon 1, and the other consumer should be for weapon 2.
  • The remaining four actives should be considered as "utility" slots and you can use nearly anything you like, but it's typically very useful to dedicate one of them for use as a multi-target (AOE/Cone) builder (for both weapons), because you must often deal with swarms.
  • As for your 7 passive slots, the whole trick here is to find those passives you've unlocked that will do three very specific and simple things:
  • Do they somehow "pump" (boost) one or more of the combat stats that your build theme revolves around?
  • Do they somehow proc extra damage or proc a boost to one of your chosen combat stats when you use an attack subtype that one or both of your weapons specialize in?
  • By now you should have chosen 7 actives and 7 passives, but it's time for one more "fine-tuning" pass based on the states (Afflicted/Weakened/Hindered/Impaired) that your two weapons can apply.
  • Every weapon can easily apply Affliction or Weaken, but Hinder and Impair are harder to apply and reapply during a fight (they're usually on long cooldown timers and applied mostly by elite actives).
  • If you find any actives or passives that do something useful when you hit a target that is Afflicted or Weakened (per your chosen two weapons), consider replacing one of your 7/7 choices so far but only if the synergy with Affliction/Weakened is stronger than one of your synergies for your chosen combat stats or attack subtypes. This advice might not make much sense at first, but as you gain more experience you'll see the usefulness of prioritizing stats and subtypes over states.
  • If you find any actives or passives that do something useful when you hit a target that is Hindered or Impaired, these might be very useful in your build, or not useful at all. The reason for this is due to how infrequently you can actually apply Hinder/Impair, and how short the duration of such states typically are. It's certainly worth reviewing for synergies with Hinder/Impair, but typically you'll find far more bang for the buck by looking for other synergies instead. There are always some notable exceptions to this general guideline, though, and it totally depends on the theme and specific weapons used in your build.
  • The final aspect of your build is to decide on the exact mix of talisman types you need to support the theme of your build. This is an art in itself, and you should read my talisman guide to fully understand what to do in this step.

It also covers how talismans work (wow that was a rather 'ding' moment for me)

Thanks zed, I've been meaning to read up on alot of stuff. I think the theorycrafting for this game will blow other games out of the water, as the system seems to go pretty deep.

I think I'm as far as I can go without knowing fully what I'm doing now (just started on the savage coast, and the difficulty upped a notch again).
