Addons

I've never been a fan of those big addon "Packages" you get. I've found it's alot easier to just build your own UI around what you need. A fair number of the traditional mods have been built into the UI of late.

For instance:
Do you like the default unit frames? are they good enough for you, or do you want to modify them some how? There are some funky unit frame addons Such as pitbull and x-Perl, but they take quite alot of configuring. Anothe roption is Grid, though that's mroe of a raid thing.

How about the default button bars. Are there enough, in the right place, that do enough for you? If not, check out some of the bar mods. Bartender is very good. Lets me do what i want with out too much fucking about. eg have a few big buttons and re-bind some special keys easier than the Default UI way.

What class are you? Certain builds / classes need a mod or two to help keep an eye on DoT's, buffs and short-duration cooldowns. Crowd control, blah blah.

Im using Necrosis on me Warlock. Tried carbonite and it confused the bejabers out of me, will have to make a character and play with it to see what config I need. I liked fubar and some of its handy plug ins but cant find a lot of them at the moment. It seems CT mod isnt much use now as the default UI can do most of the things I found it useful for.

People who need addons to manage their buffs and DoT's worry me :p
The standard UI works well and you don't have to worry about it breaking everytime there is a patch.

my favorite mods...

drdamage - for telling me how much damage abilities do
msbt - mik's scrolling battle text - its scrolling combat text, but nicer! and very configurable.
recount - for lolling at dps that can't beat me on dps.
ct_buffmod - for listing my buffs neatly
ct_unitframes - for giving freindly and informative target-of-target pictures
ora2 - raid related really - spamming invites, MT windows, etc.
dbm - deadly boss mods - for raids mostly, bunch of boss timers and stuff, so i dont have to time enrage timers and such myself.
omen - threat monitor
hmmm... sure there should be more than that :p i'll have a quick look when i get home, don't think i've missed anything too important though.

did use talented and closetgnome/itemrack, but no need with the new char sheet and talent improvements in the native ui.

Probably explains why your rogues suck them :p

Monitoring Hunger for blood, slice and dice, enveonm, rupture, Deadly poison stacks, trinket procs is pretty tricky with the standard UI. My favorite mod for keeping an eye on them is NTK (NeedToKnow). You give each bar a color, and a debuff/buff to monitor, and it lights up when it's active.

./yawn. yes, everyone that doesnt use addons is clearly far far proer than people that do. it is clearly much more technically difficult to spam random buttons and hope for the best than it is to use addons that present information to you. using a mod that displays your cooldowns in an easy to spot area of the screen, rather than a half dozen timers scattered around your ui, is basically the same as using iddqd.

If your play style before using addons was 'to spam random buttons' then there is no hope for some people!

:)

I'm not saying addons are a bad thing, I just think some people become over realiant on them - Then you get the people who insist 'you can't raid unless you have these addons' which is frankly rubbish.

The ones I use make extra, better thought out places for important buttons and take away some of the absolute clutter on the side bars. Necrosis for instance. Dont raid so wont need any fancy timers or owt.
