Boardgames boardgames.....

I thought id post my collection of board games with some musings around them. Anyone played any of these and have differing/similar opinions?

1/ Mansions of Madness (plus several PoD expansions) : Ive only played this a couple / three times total and i love it. More so than Arkham Horror. The downside is it needs 2 people minimum to play given you need a keeper and player(s). Id rate this a solid 8/10

2/ Betrayal at house on the hill: I cannot find a way to enjoy this game. Ive played through it serveral times and whilst the mechanics of one of hte players becomes the betrayer is interesting i never really enjoy it. That said some of my gaming group do. 6/10

3/ Descent- Journeys underground:Average at best. Takes for ever to set up and then an equally long time to play. Ive played games of this where in 4 hours the players barely make it past 2nd or 3rd chamber. Models are pretty good. 5/10

4/ Memoir 44: My sons go to game. Great, simple war game. Easy setup, easy play mechanics, pretty good fun all around. 8/10

5/ Zombies: (+1 expansion I own) historically my groups go to game for zombie slaying fun. easy to play. Difficult to master ad brings out the evil in your friends. 8/10

6/ Space hulk (3rd): I love this game. It doesnt come out much though. NEver got round to painting the mini's either. For the nostalic feeling id give this an 8/10. But for playability: 7/10

7/ Arkham Horror: Thematically its brilliant. Play wise: I havent a fooking clue. one of those need to have in the collections but will likely never play it kind of games. My gaming group has little to no interest in playing it either which emphasises the likelyhood of it never being played. 6/10

8/ Dominion (first set): love the mechanics of this game. Another regular goto game for the group. never tire of this and everytime there are different strategies to try to win. Easy to pick up and play with a definate 'thats how it works' stage. 9/10

9/ Xwing: The new FFG starwars mini'sgame, spiritual successor to Wings of War. For that reason alone plus its Starwars it gets a sound 9/10.

10/ Runebound: Played it twice. Probably wont play it again. Nuff said. 4/10

11/ Dungeon (the 2nd edition. Wotc releasing a new version this month). Havent touched it in years but it was one of those games i had as a child. nostalic reasons alone keep it in the collection. 4/10

12/ Lord of the Rings LCG: I really want to enjoy this game. But no matter how many times i try to play it I simply dont. I dont seem to have the patience to work out the strategy with the cards. And Ive got a shed load of it (all the first expansion set, khazad dum + 2 core sets) so i really have little to no excuse. 4/10

13/ Eclipse - dawn of a new galaxy: Oh this one is a good game. Definately worth the 60 i threw down to pick it up . think a quicker twilight imperium with all the empire building, exploration, experimentation and killing of your opponents 10/10

13/ Merchants and Mauraders: Think the old PC sid meirs Pirates game and this is it, in board game format. Great fun. Good playthrough but perhaps not as popular amongst the group as say Eclipse. Ive converted at least 1 person here into getting it. 9/10

14/ Zombicide: picked it up last week. Fooking A+**+. Beats all the other zombie games ive seen hands down so far. Looking forward to many a game with this one and you can solo play it! yay 10/10

15/Dust tactics: love the simplicity of this boar/wargame. mini's are excellent value and great quality. Have a huge amount of money sunk into this one (probably 400-500) and still dont have all the mini's. Great thing is my 8yr old can play and win as well. 10/10

16/ Legend of Drizzt: I like this as a dnd 4e based minis game. Its simpler to play than Descent and can be played solo. Each of the monsters have their own logic structure to determine the actions they made. Id give this a 9/10 and a better game than Descent.

Might be more as i think of them but thats pretty much my base game collection.

Journeys in the dark ahem : Played this a bit but have not cracked open the two expansions I have sadly. I think the more you play the quicker you get at setting up but if you rotate who's running it then the set up process can take a while to learn. Really needs to be a solid handover from one Overlord to the next. My group have always enjoyed it and are usually finished or about to get to the final room at the close of play.

Sat on my shelf crying out to be played and has only had two outings with the group. Very enjoyable and the two times we played it in our group it was a solid thumbs up. Both times there was a point where the game tipped from Merchants to Marauders though and there were ships being sunk all over the place. Get yourself a good Captain.

Zed, can you recommend any good games for kids under the age of 10? My kids love boardgames but apart from my ancient copy of Advanced Heroquest (which they love) they only play stuff like Monopoly. Any ideas for something a bit... different?

Anyone tried the Game of Thrones Boardgame and is it any good? I still play Kingmaker now and then and if the GoT Isn't very good, I might adapt Kingmaker.

I'd add in Settlers of Catan and Wings of War, I've yet to try x-wing but Wings of War has fully painted models and a nice simple system everyone can quickly get to grips with

If you want similar to heroquest I cannot recommend the 4E boardgames highly enough : the Legend of Drizzt or Wrath of Ashardalon being the likely best of the 3. Ravenloft is a player killer and can lower the fun somewhat

X-Wing mini's game is also good fun. Like Wings of War its all painted mini;s and has a great rule system using a few dice to determine attacks. Cant help but make the Tie fighter noises as you move them around a table mind you.

Settlers or Catan, Small World, Super Dungeon explore are also worth looking at for under 10's - but to be honest my 8yr old plays space hulk, Dust Tactics, Memoir 44, Zombicide and legend of Drizzt with me so its hard to say what would be suitable.

Grab a redbox, get them started early :)

Then you can carry over some of the heroquest miniatures but give them a larger scope of possibilities

My opinions on those I have[played:

1/ Mansions of Madness (plus several PoD expansions) :

Awful, linear and far too luck driven for a game of this type. See my entry on the geek. Played once, never again.

4/ Memoir 44: Never played this but heard good things from wargamers.

5/ Zombies: I am immediately put off by anything with "Zombies" in the title...

7/ Arkham Horror: One of my favourite games, but I would not play with more than 1 of the main expansions or it gets far too messy.

8/ Dominion (first set): A good game to start getting into deck building games, of which there are many. I now only have the basic game as I prefer Ascension, but it occasionally gets played.

10/ Runebound: A bit of fun, gets played occasionally if I want a good old fashioned monster bash. Not a lot of skill though.

12/ Lord of the Rings LCG: I really want to enjoy this game - likewise, something just is not there for me. I just have the core game and the first 2 expansions, I find it very samey. Game of Thrones is a better game I think, but this is a cooperative one.

13/ Eclipse - dawn of a new galaxy: Oh this one is a good game. Definately worth the 60 i threw down to pick it up . think a quicker twilight imperium with all the empire building, exploration, experimentation and killing of your opponents 10/10. Agree entirely - one of the best games out there.

13/ Merchants and Mauraders: Fun, a bit overrated but I like it. I have heard a lot of bad press, perhaps because some find it predictable, and it is very very (overly) difficult to win as a pirate.

Might be more as i think of them but thats pretty much my base game collection.[/QUOTE]

Get them posted on the geek. Mine are and I own a few more than you do!!!

Lots of good games out there. Some I own are:

Bohnanza (bean trading card game) is fun, and a couple of variants to mess around with.
Hanging Gardens - abstract kind of game but very simple but requires a lot of thought.
Stone Age - an intro "gateway" worker placement game. Make sure you have a good sniff of the dice cup :)
Thebes - I love this one. You travel around Eurpoe getting knowledge etc for excavations and then you get to the dig sites and draw from bags. The treasures are all historically accurate and any child will love putting his mitts into the bag and seeing what he/she draws...
Fearsome Floors - you have 1 bods and you have to try and avoid the big nasty. You and your opponents are trying to stay away from him, at the same time trying to get him to move towards your opponents (it follows movement rules). Silly:)
Carcasonne - just get the base set. A tile laying game building cities, roads etc. A big seller worldwide.
Card games like Poo (you are monkeys in a zoo throwing poo at each other, Archaeology, and of the Fluxx games (I just have Pirates) may be worth looking at._

Check out Boardgamegeek.com, as there are many such lists on the site.

Hope that helps :)

i want a co-op game (ie. no dungeon master type), but with a bit more character building/progression and less luck involved than Arkham Horror... was hoping descent would be alright, but really dont like playing the dungeon master in it (being that constrained, yet playing against mutliple players... its just not fun.)
suggestions?

Legend of Drizzt/Wrash of ashardalon - Monsters controlled by players. Characters earn Exp and find treasure. Luck based due to dice

Zombicide: kill zombies, find stuff, earn exp, cause more zombies to spawn

Runebound: wander around the world completing quests. Earn exp to go for harder quests.

Eclipse (though this is more about killing your opponent at the right time): build up your race, the sectors you control, then go on a major killing spree

I am waiting for Suburbia to be released in the UK, and also Exodus: Proxima Centauri is on my list of wants...

What an oik... I forgot about what is probably my favourite game, that a 10 year old would enjoy also:

Tales of the Arabian Nights. This is a great looking product where each player moves around the board trying to get a predetermined number of story points and destiny points to win (these must total 20). It is almost entirely luck based as encounters are a combination of dice rolls, what skills and statuses you have and your choice of encounter reaction. It is a game people do not play necessarily to win since it is a storytelling game, just like the Book of 1,001 Nights...

There is no other game around of its type.

Ive got myself a copy of last night on earth for christmas. Another zombie based game but this time with a zombie master vs the players.

Looking at Munchkin (anyone played this card game) or Fluxx.

Also considering Descent 2nd Edition which seems to have all the issues in Descent 1 fixed.

Munchkin is an odd game where you simply kill monsters and take their treasure. It is technically awful, but can be quite amusing, the cards are humorous but I don't think it has a lot of replayability as games are very samey. With a lot of players is is far too long, especially since it normally centres on who is winning. I do own it along with the first 3 expansions.

Fluxx games are all the same, I have the pirate one and that is enough. They get slated on the Geek, but they are quick games where the rules change as rule cards get played. The ides is to achieve one of the goals (which change as new goals are played) by having the 2 objects required played in front of you. A good quick filler.

BTW I sent you a message and you must have binned it... are you around over Christmas?

I have the Munchkin boardgame, it was pretty fun, although with only two I thought was a little harder to complete, a good giggle though, if you're in this neck of the woods at any point you're welcome to swing in and borrow it :)

I tried to convince Gottaa that me getting the X-Wing game would be a good idea and he said no. Next time i'm down we are in his local gaming shop and hes casually says, "That X-Wing game looks good." Contrary bugger, /sigh

Mind you least hes open to the idea now, just need to actually purchase a copy then argue over who plays what.

Munchkin board game was fun but does get hugely silly so best played as a relief to something more serious rather than the preamble.

Also tempted with the Warhammer LCG, reviews seem good but dont know how pick up and put downable it is.
