not really seen these games before and you have really peaked my interest, arkham, Betrayal at House on the Hill and zombies! look awesome games. Has anyone played castle ravenloft yet? and are the aboved mentioned games easy to get into? ( would like to play them with my kids when they get a tad older )

We play at a friends with at least one of the expansions - IIRC it's Innsmouth.

Aealon, I guess it depends how much of an attention span your kids have. Arkham Horror can be quite a long game - with five of us playing it usually lasts for 5-6 hours or so. The others are shorter and snappier, Zombies! lasts about an hour if I'm thinking of the same game. Rules-wise they aren't so much of a problem. Most of the Fantasy Flight games do look quite complex at first glance as they have a lot of tokens and counters, sub-boards for various tracks and the rulebook is generally quite hefty but once you've played a turn or two then you'll find that it all falls into place quite fast.

Good boardgames to play with kids of around 10 years would be stuff like Carcassonne, Agricola, Metro, Kill Dr Lucky or Munchkin.

I remember starting Talisman with all the boards at ten in the morning and the game lasting well in to the evening on several occasions.

Played a game of Talisman 1st Edition with friends not so long ago. Took 8 hours to complete! :p

I assume the newer editions have an improved (shorter) play time and better rules?

Not board games but close enough; played a couple of games of Dominion which seems fairly funky.

Favourite game though is the "Paranoia Mandatory Bonus Fun Card Game" excellent backstabbing fun :)

The Castle ravenloft game will be sampled by us in a week or two time as one of my DnD group has it.

He believes its easier than Descent to play, no DM required as each player ends up controlling monsters they have uncovered.

Zombie is easy: Draw a location tile. Add it to the board, move your men 1D6 squares. Fight any zombies. Move zombies, die, lots. Simply in play and execution.

Betrayal at house on the hill ( i can never remember its name) needs at least 3 players. at some point in the game one player becomes the evil dude who has to stop everyone else succeeding. ive yet to play it with people though, just run through it a couple of times on my own.

runebound is remarkably easy to play

dungeon quests looks interesting but i think there are better games to pick up first! like you though im getting them to play with my boys as they grow olders (and at the games club im a member of)

The zombies game sounds quick and easy to figure out. I'm also thinking of some sort of decent boardgame to play with my kids (11 & 8).

I'll have a look at the other games suggested here too.

edit: had a quick look this lunchtime at some games. Is the heroquest game a rip off? Lots of plastic! My kids like left 4 dead, so I'm wondering if that might be fun for us or even the Munchkins game looks a laugh.

Reading this makes me pause before getting Diplomacy. Arkham Horror sounds nice in that it is co-op, Hmm maybe it's time to prepare an xmas list :)

Just had an evening of the Battlestar Galactica boardgame. A lot of fun even for someone like me who hasn't seen the series.

Just had a look at the BS:G one, looks quite cool, if only I had enough geeky friends locally :)

Anubis

The Doggy Chimp
For young 'uns I'd suggest Poo - a quick and fun game involving monkeys and ... poo.
Bohnanza is fun for another quickie. Kill Dr Lucky is an awful game, played it once and never again. Zombies - no thanks... talking of No Thanks - that's a nice little game also.
Arkham Horror - I have the smaller expansions and a couple of the bigger ones, very good game although can last a while. Far better than the Chaosium game, which was good.
I have 3rd ed Talisman and all the expansions, not played it for ages though. I'd like to try the new edition, but won't invest.
Runebound is fun, again a longer game.
Dungeonquest is fun also, I have just boutht the complete GW edition for 21 including postage, which is a snitch since the expansions are still going for 40+ (plus I can get a tenner for the spare base game I have already). Not seen the new version.
Tomb is a dungeon bash type game but quite quick and can get messy.
Castle Ravenloft - I have played it and found it decidedly average. OK but nothing special so won't be getting it.
Other nice games are The Hanging Gardens (quick and easy), Stone Age (worker placement/set collection) which plays in about an hour, and Vikings.

Just bought a copy of Space hulk (3rd edition), The world of warcraft board game with an expansion and advance heroquest. Looking at getting one more before christmas, budget might stretch to a copy of warhammer quest if I look around. Its either that or Arkham Horror / Betrayal at house on the hill / zombies / Talisman.

just got to paint the 100 plus figures now :(

Descent is my favourite but you have to allow a long time to play as the games last hours. Talisman is good as is the Buffy the vampire slayer boardgame

ok, well after recently playing Arkham Horror (excellent game! sure theres many happy hours left in that for us), me and my mates have had a discussion and decided we'd like a game that has RPG elements (the character building and equipment gathering bits), but with lots of combat, and no need for a GM (as bluntly, none of us have the time to create/run campaigns, and having all GMed at least a little ourselves, we prefer the role of players).
Cooperative would be good, as it makes us less likely to argue about how much of a twat someone is for rolling all fucking 6s yet again...
Needing a GM might be ok, so long as it doesnt require much in the way of planning in advance...

any recomendations?
we thought maybe advanced heroquest or something along those lines, but would like some opinions on whether its any good or not...

Is betrayal at house on the hill not a bit like that? No GM, item collecting and the horror element ( like Arkham ) I have never played it so I am just guessing on this. How about Castle ravenloft? do you need a GM for that?

Not played Advance heroquest yet ( will be a while since my lads are only 3 and 5 ) but it looks decent enough, loads of room for house rules and expansions.
