Janie chat.

I have to agree with most of what you are saying mate. On the flip side, we have consistently bought Rafas second, third choices or fourth choices not his first choices. I've stated this a number of times in posts here; also stated that it is Rick Parrys fault, the Chief Exec. He is bloody useless, he takes months over transfers that should be done and dusted and will undoubtedly be sacked once the Americans are established. One of their sons is waiting on a work visa to come live here and be Managing Director.

We had no choice in losing Owen - the management let his contract run down to the last 12 months. He was on the bench for the first game of the season (CL qualifying) and still hadn't signed. Whats not as widely known is that Rafa tried to get Eto'o in exchange (this was before his reputation exploded, weeks before he moved to Barca). Parry fudged that and wouldn't cough up an extra few million.

Pennant, Kuyt, Gonzales - none of these were his first choices. Meanwhile, over the last few years, we have seen players that he wanted to bring in, like Eto'o, Alves, Simao enhance their reputations and their prices.

Players are always a gamble - in Rafas defence any players that don't work out are swiftly moved on and (I think) every single time at a profit. The one I am really surprised about not doing well is Gonzales, who was sensational last year in Spain.

I had a look back over the last few years at the net spend of the top four and Rafa has done a good job with the cash he has had. What has amazed me is that Arsenal have had a net profit on transfers in three out of the last four years.

Buying Anelka for 500,000 and selling him for around 23m is www.win.com/roflmadrid.asp and still makes me laugh.

Pennant is a highly talented young footballer, a pillar of the community and a fine role model for today's youth. My only regret is we didn't sell him to our friendly neighbours, Tottenham Hotspur.
