yeah... but you get fifa 09 with it, and just the adverts for that game are enough to put me off it for life, let alone the fact its another shitty football game :p

Sounds like the 360 or PC versions are superior to the PS3 version.

Gamespots review.

"It's a shame, in light of these impressive design elements, that the PlayStation 3 version is shockingly inferior to the others from a technical perspective. Although the Xbox 360 and PC versions display the occasional visual oddity and bland texture, these nitpicks are easy to overlook. Sadly, the jagged edges, washed-out lighting, and slightly diminished draw distance of the PS3 release aren't so easy to dismiss. We also experienced a number of visual bugs on the PS3. Character faces disappeared several times, leaving only eyeballs and hair; limbs on robots went missing; some character models had an odd outline around them as if they were cel-shaded; and the day-to-night transition may cause odd streaks on the screen as you move the camera around. This version doesn't even offer trophies, whereas the Xbox 360 and PC versions offer Xbox Live/Windows Live achievements. "

How does a technically superior machine keep churning out versions worse than older platforms?

You have to wonder if MS and their money has anything to do with it.

"Heres $1million for 'development'..any chance of hobbling the ps3 version a bit?"

It's I think more to do with the PS3 development tools to be the equivelant of flint and tinder to start a fire and MS tools being more akin to 4000 litres of napalm with a nuke in the middle. PS3 versions have the capacity to be alot better, but take alot longer to get there, while with 360 you can quickly unlock the potential.

It's also in this case though due to PC being the main development skew, to convert that to 360 is easy, PS3 is pain in the ass. So basically if you want a "good" PS3 game you pretty much want to make sure it's either the main skew (doesn't happen very often from what I've read), or get a PS3 exclusive

+1

I prefered the PS3 version of Oblivion visually. With Oblivion though Bethesda took more time and churned out a great version. From what I have seen the Fallout 3 engine doesn't seem generations ahead of Oblivion so its a strange situation.

We'll probably see a patch to prop up the PS3 version at some point.

Got 360 version based on reviews so far.

Stupid is as stupid does
The reasons the PS3 versions aren't as good is because, like the PS2, its a complete shit to write for.

Coz the Xbox is a PC with fixed hardware most devs know how to get the best out of it. The breathtaking arrogance of Sony means they aren't interested in making it easier for developers.

/shrug

Is that how you make a great game? By churning? :D

There's always Steam if you can't get a version in the shops. Haven't compared the prices directly, but they're usually cheap or at least competitive.

Put a few hours in yesterday. It is basically Oblivion in a Fallout skin, the graphics look dated and the animation is shocking, but thankfully the combat and leveling systems are taken from the original Fallouts not Oblivion which were to of my biggest gripes with Oblivion. If you can get past the messy appearance I think there is a good game in here, need to put alot more time into it yet, but so far I liking it if not blown away.

OK, fuck Steam.

I bought it there last night for 36. Thought "Well, I can probably shave a few quid off it by hunting around, but meh, I'd have to leave the house, and I like Valve. Plus everywhere will probably have sold out."

Pop out to Asda for some beer while I wait, they have a big stack of them for 25. Took me another 6 hours to download it. Damnit.

Well enjoying it so far. Personally I think it looks very nice. Still plays like the original, and still has the same atmosphere.

I like it, glad I bought it. We'll see if it's long enough. ;)

Sexy?
Really enjoying it, definately captures the fallout feel well. Am a little concerned that the level cap should be higher but will see how it goes. :)

Anyone else encountered the Fire Ants yet? Ouch.

Hung around Megaton and did quite alot of the side quests yesterday and really started to enjoy myself.

They're not so bad once you realise that wading in with a sledgehammer isn't the best tactic. ;)
Mirelurks, on the other hand, are currently my favourite flavour of death and pain.

You know, this is rather what I was hoping STALKER would be like. The atmosphere of wandering through the wasteland is downright eerie, and it all just seems more imaginative (and less buggy ;)).

I had to admit, I was a little dubious about Fallout going the FPS route, but it definitely makes it more atmospheric and immersive than the originals.
If I had to be critical in my comparison, I'd say that since they don;'t need dialogue and descriptive text as much now, they've been a bit spare with it.
Don't get me wrong, the dialogue and the voice acting is great (apart from one kid who was 15 going on 30), but they often only have a couple of lines to say.

Oh, and the AI is decent, but not amazing. Perfect example is when I was wandering through the wasteland, and I come across a destroyed trainyard. About halfway in, I find what looks like a large camp, with smashed skeletons strewn around. Not a problem, think I. I've just picked up a rather tasty new gun, and I've been shredding the raiders I've come across.
Oh look, there's a teddy-bear sitting by the fire. Aww, aren't you a cute teddy-bear? I think I'll put you in my house. *yoink*

I take about 4 steps, then hear a blood-curdling bellow that makes the ground shake. I pretty much crap my pants on the spot as an angry collosus super-mutant lumbers round the side of a train, and starts charging towards the mean ol' teddy-bear thief. Oh dear.

Perfectly engineered encounter; funny yet also scary and challenging.
Unfortunately, after getting my head smashed in for a bit, I realised that I could just hide underneath an indestructible bit of wreckage, and take pot-shots at him.
In his defence, at about half health he finally realised that this wasn't going to work, and ran off and hid behind another cart. However, i just had to shoot him a couple of times, and we were back in the same situation.

Anyway, glitches like that seem pretty rare. Go buy it. \o/
