i've not played it, but saw it in action yesterday...

ground combat = buggy. saw one mission my mate couldnt complete as he was constantly being shot at from underground, so it wouldnt let him scan the crates he needed to :p lookedl ike it could be good when its working smoothly, though.
space combat - looked fun, but a bit easy for now - this was low level though, so wont hold that against it.
shopping/economy - as ridiculous as we knew it would be. in a system with replicators and suchlike, how can there be any justification for rare items and suchlike? given that all that matters is the energy in something, why can a ground combat item even compare to a ship's main battery? :p but meh, economy was always going to be hard in a universe where, essentially, everyone has everything they want.

i'll give it a go, but probably not at release. looks a bit too buggy and unpolished for that.

I agree it looks like it should have another 4 months or so before release, I guess as they set the release date so long ago they had to stick to it :(

I heard that Atari set the release date even if Cryptic believe its not ready, and working mad to get it in some sort of working version. I also heard that if they release in time they get a $20 million bonus from the publisher.
This helps secure a future for Champions Online and Star Trek Online, plus also the 3rd MMO Cryptic are working on.

If your smart your bonus is tied to a successful launch not subscription figures. Figure STO will get a large uptake of the free month and a big drop off after month 1. so 20mill to do that first month right ... ill take that. Pay the devs a nice bonus (say 2 mill put aside for that) the rest plowed into MMO 3 :)

Business wise it does make sense, but you do end up with a poor end product, but I guess in the MMO market enough people buy one at launch just to see it doesn't matter

I dont disagree, but if you have a bonus of 20K over your head to do something by such a date would you try to deliver a working product on time vs missing the deadline and delivering a brilliantly what everyone wants working product?

Sad thing is these days publishers call the shots :(

Sad indeed as Cryptic are going to get labelled with delivering poor MMOs on time, and if they aren't careful they'll be sent to Coventry with Funcom and SOE.

They will gain their very own bunch of haters though who will spam shite on forums about their future games without any information being released. Maybe that's the sign of making it in the industry?

Looks nice, but I notice no other ships?

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.
