What are the thoughts of you Gooners on Upson ?

Wonder where he will end up and who it is who has bid for him. Its not LFC in for him is the word out of Anfield; Benitez thinks he is a bit slow. I thought he was pretty fast at Arsenal ? Too many dodgy Brum kebabs, must be.

Upson was slated to be the next Tony Adams at one stage (if I had �5 for every time I'd heard that.......) but always seemed to be injured or there was someone in front of him on the team sheet.

Toure forced himself into the team by virtue of talent so I can only assume that Upson was never up to that level while at Highbury but seems to have done OK since leaving.

I don't recall him being slow but it's years since I've payed attention to him playing.

He reminded me a lot of Harry Kewell, always injured and maybe not up to it mentally. Potentially he could have been great but I think he has missed the boat. He always seemed one of those players who was happy to get payed and not do a lot else.

I have no idea how he has been at Brum but he never seemed slow. Not by defenders standards anyway.

Slow does not mean "Bad Defender". John Terry is slow and Tony Adams was slow. What matters as a Central Defender more than pace is your reading of the game.

He can tackle and is good one on one if the player with the ball is running him, but his positional play is rubbish, his marking is iffy to say the least (at setplays he is terrible) he often gets sucked towards the man with the ball way to often, don't think he reads the game very well.
He'd make a better defensive midfield, when his job is to hustle and break up play (his strengths) and not have to worry to much about positioning and marking.

He was an average right back but was outstanding in Central Defence last season. Liverpools best player by quite a distance. He has no pace so his positional play was excellent last season, meaning he read the game very well.

Its not meant to imply every top defender needs pace mate, but its a big bonus to have someone with pace who can play it out of defence and so you dont have to defend so deep. Its what we've been lacking for a long time.

Agree with you about Carragher being our best player last year. Hyypia is also a good defender.

The press are mostly on the ball; LFCs main targets are still Milito, Figo and (groan) Crouch. From a contact in Spain : Figo had a meeting with Florentino P yesterday. Figo told Flo P that he wanted to join LFC asap. Florentino told Figo that he would be able to leave, but that he had to be patient.



Reina is going to surprise a lot of folk; folk in the know saying he is or soon will be the best GK in Europe. Couldnt help but groan when Benitez compared Sissoko to Vieira, not his style at all coming out with that kind of shit.

Dunno about that. Petr Cech is simply (and sickeningly) outstanding. Best goalkeeper in the world IMO, let alone Europe. Buffon is good too but I think Cech is better. Bloody Chav wankers.

Gerrard was Liverpools best player last season - if the silly transfer nonsense hadn't turned all Liverpool fans against him, they'd agree, but now they hate him, LOL. Flight doesn't even class Gerrard as a Key Player next season for Liverpool (in the top 4 thread) he reckon Alonso is better - maybe in a Formula 1 car but never on a football pitch

Agree with you mate, Cech is superb. Reina was simply astonishing for Villareal last season; most clean sheets and a lot of penlty saves and in a side with a very mediocre defence. Folks in the know said he was the best GK in Spain (ahead of Casillas). LFC GK coach is also the GK coach for the Spanish side; we finally got rid of the donkey who was doing the job for the last 12 years responsible for messing up a series of potentially good keepers.

Time will tell, but I'm extremely optimistic about our transfer activity. Not had time to catch up this morning so dont know if the Sissoko thing is signed yet, but he wille be another terrific buy.

All the rumours say we're after Baptista but they change their mind every 5 mins. First he wants to come to England to play for us or Manure, next Seville are pissed off with us and now he's apparently staying in Spain another year to get his passport.
