Gerrard was absolutely shite for half of last season Janie. Very ordinary and mediocre. I'd say Alonso is most definitely our best player; huge blow losing him with a broken ankle last term.

If his head is right he can be our best player, but he needs to add a lot of thought and discipline to his game instead of trying to be everything.

The only thing of note Liverpool did last season was win the Champions League, a very poor league position with conceding too many soft goals (from corners mostly - depict the mighty Carrager!) and terrible away form. Would you have won the Champions League without Gerrard? No. Can you honestly say that about any other Liverpool player? No.
That's my point.

I'm kind of inclined to say feck off Paddy now. We have it every year and its getting ridiculous. I don't know how we would replace him and feel we would be weaker without him but this is probably the last year that he will be worth anything, so maybe its time.

I don't actually think we'll get anyone else high profile before the start of the season. Baptista looks off. The only possibility I think may be SWP but its a long long shot although it would make sense if RP goes to Gala.

Wenger indicated at the end of last season that there would be a big shake up in the summer. Mainly because of another average CL performance and losing the title. Maybe getting rid of all of these players coming to the end of their career are what he meant.

He was, he won them the Champions League, you said so yourself in the football thread in the members area, what do you think will be remenbered most by Liverpool fans when looking back at that season? Winning the Champions League, Finishing 5th, Being runner up in the League Cup or losing to Burnley in the FA cup? It's simple without Gerrard they wouldn't have won it.

Which simply isn't true. He switched to Central Defense last season and was widely recognised as Liverpools best player. As for Gerrard being their best player, you now say that:

One game doesn't make a season. If you think it does you need your head examined. He pulled them up in the CL final and kept them in against Olympiakos but he wasn't their best player ALL SEASON. Carragher was.

Paddy is 29 and I've seen people say that he's past his best and the Italian or Spanish game would suit him better in his declining years. Also heard that he's burnt out due to playing such a physical game season after season.

Can't help but think it's all bollocks though as look at Keane.

Last season Paddy apparently turned down Real for love of Arsenal so I don't see why he'd leave now.

If he does happen to go then good luck to him as he's sweated blood for the Gooners.

As an aside, yes he had a poor season last year by his standards but he also had some damn fine games. Most of the rest of the team had a poor season to some degree aswell.

It didn't help that Gilberto was out for so long so Paddy had to do the holding midfield role and yet people still slate him for not getting forward enough

It was the final (also he scored a very important goal in the group stage I believe). It turned a poor season (finishing behind Everton....) into a great season. It meant they could be in the competition this coming season - generating lots of more money. It was the 3rd or 4th time Liverpool had won the final meaning they get to keep the trophy, the players will go down in Liverpool legend.

No the game meant nothing whatsoever.

What point are you arguing? In player terms just coz he had one good game doesn't make him Liverpools best player. That was Liverpools most important GAME and changed the CLUBS season but we're not talking about that. We're talking about their OVERALL BEST PLAYER through the WHOLE season.
